It is home to many historical landmark and cultural attractions that have helped make it one of the most popular tourist destinations in Nassau County. The town was first settled in 1764 by Europeans who were looking for land to farm. The area now called Massapequa Park was part of Millbrook Manor, which was also named for the ancient mill town of Machias, Maine. In 1858, John Davenport bought 1,500 acres (500 ha) of land in what is now Massapequa Park from Nicholas Wolfson. He established a farm there and named it after his friend and business partner Andrew Jackson Downing. Davenport's Farm soon became an important center for local farming and trade. He built a large house on the property that still stands today, called Davenport House. In 1865, he married Myrtilla Jordon and they had several children. The couple also founded Jordon & Dixon Loaned Library which still operates today as a national treasure under New York State law. After Andrew Jackson Downing died in 1881, his wife continued running their farm until her death in 1915. She bequeathed their farm to their son Nicholas who then sold it to developers Harry Laughlin and James Hylan in 1951 for $25 million dollars ($265 million adjusted). Hylan held onto the land until 1971 when he sold it to developer Lewis Hilliger for $23 million dollars ($241 million adjusted). Hilliger renamed the property "Massapequa Park" after his family's ancestral home in Massachusetts where they had spent summers as children growing up. Hilliger also developed other parts of Nassau County including Westbury Village which is located adjacent to modern-day Massapequa Park on Hempstead Road across from Farmingdale High School; Ridgewood Estates on Long Island; East Meadow Beach; Glen Cove on Mays Landing Creek; North Babylon Beach; Jericho Beach ; South Babylon Beach ; Southampton Terminal ; Hauppauge Point Light Station ; Syosset Harbor Light Station ; Lake Success Marina - all located within present day boundaries of "Massapeqa Park". The park has been designated as a National Historic Landmark (#810826).

In 1764, the British captured New York from the French and designated it as part of their Province of Quebec. The park was renamed after George Washington in 1814. In 1847, Congress created Manor of Westchester County, which included the park. It was transferred to Kings County in 1916 and then to Nassau County in 1959.
