In 1922, The Gourmet Coffee House underwent a major renovation and became The Starbucks Corporation. After becoming Starbucks Corporation, The Gourmet CoffeeHouse continued to serve delicious cups of Joe until it closed its doors in 1994. However, some enthusiasts have managed to keep track down archived footage and photos from before Starbucks Corporation took over ownership of the business. Massapequa Park is a small town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 5,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Village of Hempstead. The name derives from Massachusetteshire, England. The first European settler in what is now Massapequa Park was John Smith (1624-1689), who came overland through Canada and arrived on July 5, 1638. He named it "Nassau". In 1714, Dutch settlers began to arrive in search of land for a new colony in North America and they renamed the area "New Netherland". One of the early landowners in this area was Nicholas van Weyden (1598-1662). He purchased 1/4 mile (1 km) of swampy land north of present day Massapequa Park from Governor William Kidd for £200 sterling. In 1817, George Washington bought 3 acres (10 ha) northeast of present day Massapequa Park from Nicholas van Weyden for $5[1]. At that time there were only twelve people living in what is now Massapequa Park and only three dwellings: one house on State Road 12A near present day Parsons Corners; one house on Meadow Lane east of Post Road; and one house on Old Manor Road east of Route 113.[2] On October 20th, 1820 the village plat was filed with the Town Board. On November 10th Joseph Tompkins Jr., an American Revolutionary War veteran and member of the Albany Committee which drafted the Declaration Of Independence offered his lot along with others adjoining those owned by Amos Kendall to be used as a public square or park if desired by the town board but no action was taken due to lack interest until 1827 when James Wetherill donated two tracts totaling 11 acres (4 ha)[3]. These tracts would become parcels #6 and #7 within present day massapeqa park . One early resident who resided in what is now massaepqua park during this time period was Drury Lewis Morrissey (1807-1887).[4] Morrissey engaged himself as a doctor throughout most or all partsof upstate new york state before he settled permanently at Pequod Marsh about four miles west of where he currently resides today. While practicing medicine he also raised chickens and pigs on his property which became known as Pequod Marsh Farm . When President Abraham Lincoln came to New York City for his 1861 inauguration ball at Madison Square Garden he stayed at Mr Fenton's boardinghouse atop Fifth Avenue between 23rd Street & 24th Street after dinner then proceeded down Fifth Avenue past Mr Fenton's farm across 23rd Street to available rooms next door belonging to Drury Lewis Morrissey leading up Deputy Sheriff Edwin Greenwood who patrolled that night just beyond DoctorMorrissey's reach while DruryLewis took careOf everything inside DoctorMorrissey's office including providing glasses & flasks should anyatives occur while attending Topping House .... First Ladies Sarah Todd Whitman and Anna Laura Wood visited DoctorMorrisseys home several times prior to their departure for Washington Dc following General Sherman’s march through NY late fall 1862 ..... The local economy is based largely on agriculture, but also includes manufacturing and service sectors. There are also several universities located within walking distance ofMassapequa Park; Hofstra University (close to Borough Hall), Fordham University (near Southport), Queens College (in Jamaica), and Stony Brook University (on Long Island).
