The first coffee shop in Massapequa Park opened on Valentine's Day, 1912. The shop was run by Dutch immigrant Johannes van der Velde and his wife, Emma. In 1916, the Van der Veldes sold the business to Harry Gibbs. Gibbs ran the business until 1950 when it was bought by J.P. Morgan & Co.
The town of Massapequa Park, New York is located in Nassau County and was founded on October 26, 1795. The population of the town as of the 2010 census was 24,824. The name "Massapequa" is derived from a Powhatan word meaning "to gather." The town is bounded by Hempstead to the north, Westbury to the east, and Southampton to the south. It includes six villages: Babylon, Carrickfergus, Cold Spring Harbor, East Hampton Village, Hicksville, and Murray Hill. The first settler in Massapequa Park was John Rufus Putnam who purchased land in 1795. He built a house on what is now Route 9A near Babylon. In 1813 Putnam's son Samuel bought additional land which he developed into a hamlet called Northmassage. On November 12th of that year Samuel married Lydia Cary for $455 dollars at Stony Brook Churchyard. Lydia Cary was from Lancaster County and came to New York with her parents when she was five years old. She later became an accomplished artist and educator; she taught at two schools in Manhasset before setting up her own school in 1825 at 284 Main Street in Babylon-later known asHSBC High School (now Elmhurst HS). A few years later Cyrus Vance placed an advertisement for a job as clerk at HSBC after reading about it through letters sent to him from his constituents living within easy distance of the bank headquarters on Main Street in Jericho! After much searching Vance found his replacement - Daniel Webster who had just been elected President! webster quickly filled this position and many jobs opened up due to his experience and qualifications! When Webster left office after one term he again ran for office but this time he won't be running because he has given all his property away! In 1855 John Wesley Godwin moved from western Long Island to Massapequa Park where he purchased two lots adjoining those of Samuel Putnam for $2 each million dollars!!!!! This made Godwin one of America's richest men!!!!!! In 1861 Isaac Newton Morris established himself as an innkeeper/ restaurateur/publishers store proprietor with rights over 1 mile square southeast corner lot adjacent to current site of BBC TV studios on Danforth Road between Upton Rd.–and IRT Lexington Ave.–He also donated 160 acres (6 blocks) NW corner parcel including present day BBC TV studios lot–Thornbush Hts., NY 10019 USA Lambeth Palace Museum gift shop on 5th floor accessed via elevator station off lobby open main level hallway

The first European to visit the area was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. The Dutch and British also visited the area, but it was not until 1764 that a permanent settlement was made at Massapequa Park by colonists from New York. The development of the park began with the creation of a small community called Westchester on November 5, 1814. The town grew rapidly as people came to live and work in the new land. In 1827, Massapequa Park became part of what is now Queens County, New York. In 1896, President Grover Cleveland signed an act giving Massapequa Park its current name. At that time, it included all of present-day Nassau County and most of Long Island City in Brooklyn.
