Massapequa Park, New York is a small town located in Nassau County, New York. The town was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624 and was named for the Massapequa Heights on Long Island. The village of Massapequa was founded in 1759 and became a borough in 1827. On May 15, 1922, the town merged with nearby Babylon to form the new municipality of Babylon-Massapequa. In 1957, the township of Massapequa voted to become an unincorporated community within Nassau County. The population of Massapeqa Park was 971 at the 2000 census. The history of Massapequa Park began with its founding by Dutch colonists in 1624 as part of what is now Nassau County. At first, the settlers were farmers who cultivated maize and other crops on their farms near present-day Massapequa Heights on Long Island Sound. In 1759, when tensions between Great Britain and France increased during the Seven Years' War, several families migrated from Holland to America and set out for what is now Nassau County. They arrived with various goods and livestock that they had bought or borrowed from their friends back home. By 1760, there were about 125 people living in what is nowMassapequa Park including six families from Kingston who had made the trip overland from England across Lake George via Albany due to religious concerns about religious freedom under British rule at that time.
