The Town of Massapequa Park, New York is located in Nassau County, New York. The population was 54,813 at the 2010 census and it is the largest town in Nassau County by population. The town is named for General John Forbes, who led American forces during the Revolutionary War. The townsite was first settled in 1768 and was incorporated as a village on November 1, 1824. On October 15, 1867, the town merged with the Village of Hempstead to form the Town of Massapequa Park. The name Massapequa Park originated from an Indian word meaning "the place where deer 1971 were common." According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and (1%) is water. As of 2000, there were 53,951 people living in Massapequa Park. Massapequa Park is a small town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Westchester–Bronx–Middlesex county region. The area that now makes up Massapequa Park was first settled by Europeans in 1624. The name "Massapequa" came from the Lenape word "matsekeh". In 1788, Colonel John Graves Simcoe established a military post called Fort George on what would later become Massapequa Lake. After the Treaty of Paris ended the American Revolutionary War, Simcoe's post reverted to British control and it remains known as Fort George to this day. In 1825, Major General Israel Putnam organized an outnumbered force of Hessian mercenaries under his command to fight against Native Americans at Battle of Fallen Timbers. After reaching Massapequa Lake and engaging the Indians near present-day East Meadow Pond, Putnam's forces were forced to retreat due to superior numbers and Indian hostilities ensued which cost him many lives including that of his own son Lieutenant Colonel Israel Putnam Jr.. Colóniah Gregg became one of America's most renownedNative American officers during this time period when she led an expedition against Generalonthe Mohawk nation in 1828-29 which devastated their traditional territory northeast of Albany.- In 1841 Congress authorized erectionof a federal courthouse on Governors Island opposite Manhattan as part of renovationand enlargementof Erie Harbor following hurricane Sandy damage.- In 1870 new streets were laid out through central Massapesquaque park with avenues running north (Church Street), south (First Avenue), east (Broadway) and west (Lake Shore Boulevard). This layout remained unchanged until 1970 when First Avenue became State Route 585A., changing names again in 1978 when Main Street was rerouted away from center park along Broadwater Drive creating what is now Lakeside Boulevard.- A golf course opened in 1922 adjacent to modern day Yankee Stadium - becoming one of only two courses open for public play within city limits at that time.- A baseball diamond replaced putters courts around 1930s while tennis courts began appearing around 1960s.-- By 1990 there were only traces remaining of original Georgian architecture with few trees left standing outside largely paved over areas.-- A fire destroyed much evidence associated with early settler life before it could be studied further-- On November 8th 1997 local residents commemorated the centennial anniversaryof European settlement by erecting a statue depicting three men from Ulster County - father Father Edward Daly (1812-1884), son Michael Daly (baptized 1840) and grandson Daniel Daly who served as PostmasterGeneral for New York City 1898-1900.--On October 11th 2002 local residents erected another statue honoring World War II veterans located nextto original Father Edward Daly birthplace.--Today much evidence remains associated with early settler life indicativeofthe intergenerational continuity thatskey tounside Amerika
The first settlers in the area were small groups of Dutch, English and Irishmen who arrived in 1624. The area was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland and then the British colony of Nova Scotia. The first recorded mention of Massapequa Park was in 1760 when a group of men from Long Island visited the area. In 1814, Major General John Sullivan's army used Massapequa Park as their encampment during its retreat from New York City after its victory at Battle Of Gettysburg. On November 1, 1868, a group of men led by Reverend Samuel Morse founded what is now Westchester County College on land that had been part of Purchase Manor, which adjoined Massapequa Park. The college was one of the few educational institutions established in New York State after the American Revolution. It became an important center for education and culture in early 20th century America. In 1927, Dr. George Washington Smith donated his estate at Mount Holyoke to Westchester County for use as a public park located within reach of all residents living within its boundaries. This allowed for development around Mount Holyoke Oval which eventually became Massapequa Park Recreation Area.
