In 1941, the New York Air National Guard's 432nd Bombardment Squadron was activated at Massapequa Park. The squadron was equipped with B-17 Flying Fortress bombers and flew missions over New York City during World War II. The 432nd Bombardment Squadron is considered to be the first air unit in the United States to deploy a gift history program. The squadron's donors received items such as cigarettes, candy, postcards, and other gifts from members of the New York Air National Guard in exchange for their support of the war effort.
Massapequa Park is a small town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 1,571 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester-Onondaga Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1814 by Captain John Nichols and his family as Massapequa Point on the southern tip of Long Island. In 1825, Colonel Samuel Morse moved his family to Massapequa Point and became interested in establishing a land grant for settlers near what is now the village of West Saybrook. Morse designated an area around present-day Massapequa Lake as "Morse Landing" and began issuing deeds for land grants to individuals and families. By 1830, over 20 settler families had arrived at Massapequa Landing from Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York City and other parts of North America. In 1834 John Nichols Jr., captain of the USS Constitution whichkins had refitted as a steamboat service packet ship for transporting passengers between Syracuse and New York Harbor then operating out of NAS Roslyn (now Islip), purchased from Governor Elias Boudinot all that remained of Morse Landing including buildings on today's shoreline opposite Deer Park Reservoir where he built his home called "Nickelodeon". Captain John Nichols renamed this creek after himself - Nassau Creek - naming it after his father who also served in Congress from Nassau County (later Queens). The first store opened in Nassau Creek Village on Main Street in 1835. In 1836 Commodore David Dixon sailed upriver from Sandy Hook Naval Station with 5 British warships intent on capturing Fort Edward Castle at Oswego Canal Bridge but were thwarted by local actions including harassment by American gunboats under Commodore Matthew Perry RN during their passage upstream including one shot fired into Holmes Cay lighthouse which destroyed it; General Israel Putnam's forcesadescued them while they anchored off Newtownards Light House early next morning before sailing back downriver unopposed arriving safe at Sandy Hook late afternoon October 10th ]. Commander David Dixon reported that he had "a very fine fortress...our only Hope against its fall." His report went unpublished until 1923 when Rear Admiral Alfred Thayer Mahan published A History of US Naval Operations Against Portugal (Volumes I-III) which mentioned that there had been no shots fired although the following day's newspapers did mentionce Guns being discharged enz whilst cruising past Newtownards Light House . The United States Air Force has been deploying gift baskets and other items to its deployed units since the early days of the military. The first gift basket was sent to Fort Sill, Oklahoma in 1947. In 1951, a gift basket was sent to North Korea as part of the United Nations Command'sOperation Friendship. The USAF also sends baskets to embassies and other international locations during peacetime as well as during wartime, in commemoration of military service and donations made by friends and family members. Gift baskets have become an important part of Air Force culture, with each unit having their own favorite assortment. Some gifts are personal favorites while others commemorate special occasions or holidays. The air force ambassador program is another way for the USAF to express appreciation for individuals who have served our country. This program provides unique opportunities for airmen from all branches of the service to interact with embassy personnel from around the world. Since 9/11, many soldiers and civilians have donated unwanted or unused items they no longer need in order to help support our troops deployed overseas. These collections now form one large Donation Center located at Randolph AFB, Texas where officers from all branches can search through more than 5 million items that have been collected since 2001!

The city flourished for many years until World War II led to its decline.
