The first inhabitants of what is now Marmaroneck were the Seneca people. They were forced out of their home by European settlers in 1714 and moved to what is now Buffalo, Erie County, Pennsylvania. In 1928 the university leased land from Geneva Steel Corporation for a new campus that would include research laboratories and a student union building on Lake Ontario's south shore near Ithaca College and Cornell University; this purchase later led to the creation of Cornell University (now Ithaca College) nearby on Cayuga Lake. Ithaca College was created from several smaller colleges which had merged into Cornell University over time including Oberlin College (1912), Hamilton College (1915), and Watkins Glen Institute (1948). Mamaroneck, New York is a small town in southern Westchester County on Long Island. The original name of the town was Amherst and it changed to Mamaroneck in 1795 after the death of General Nathanael Greene. In 1814, the town became part of Westchester County. The population was 12,853 at the 2010 census. It is well-known for its white picket fences and green lawns that are home to many mansions from early nineteenth century America. The history of Mamaroneck began with two families who came to America in 1620 from Hungary and settled on a small island near what is now Mamaroneck Junction. They were joined by others over time and soon there were fifty people living on the island which they named after their hometowns in Hungary: Buda (Budapest), Pest (Pegida), Zalai (Zala), Komárom (Komárkóm) and Venedyék (Venedyér). Eventually they built a small lighthouse, ferry port, school and church on their island which they named “Mamaroneck” because it resembled an old castle in Hungary. In 1795, General Nathanael Greene died at age 71 while campaigning against British forces during the American Revolutionary War in upstate New York; his death led to an instant change to Mamaroneck’s name due to its resemblance of General Greene’s childhood home inHungary – Atertúr Castle. His widow Catherine moved with her children from England to live at Atertúr Castle until she could purchase another house nearby for them all to share when she remarried about three years later. By 1800, there were over 100 people living at Atertúr Castle including some officers of the British Army who had been stationed along with American troops during the war as part of Colonel John Sullivan’s 1st Brigade under Major General Benedict Arnold!
