The town was first settled in 1792 by Loyalists who fled British tyranny. The name "Mamaroneck" comes from the Mohawk word amaronek meaning "to cross over." In 1806, John Quincy Adams bought land here and named it after himself as part of his effort to purchase all of upstate New York for the United States. The town's population reached 10,000 in 1900; but it declined rapidly during World War I and II due to military service and natural attrition. However, Mamaroneck has seen some resurgence during the past few decades thanks to its location on Long Island Sound and its close relationship with Westchester County. Today, Mamaroneck offers a variety of cultural attractions including an art museum, a theater district, several golf courses (including one within easy reach of Manhattan), restaurants and bars galore, as well as access to Long Island Sound for swimming and boating.

Mamaroneck is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 12,549 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. Mamaroneck was founded by Dutch settlers in 1624 as "Hendrickse Vliet". The name honors Maurice de Montresor, 2nd Baron Montresor (1594-1666), who donated land to the town and also helped finance its construction. In 1797, Captain John Smith discovered the Welland Canal near present-day Mamaroneck and named it after his patron saint, Thomas Aquinas. The canal made Mamaroneck an important transportation center for goods between Westchester and Putnam counties; it also helped promote agricultural production in the area. In 1814, Mamaroneck became a U.S. statehood territory when it split from Westchester County; during that time its northern border coincided with that of Albany County (now Orchard Park). From 1825 until 1830, Mamaroneck served as the capital of Westchester County; this title was eventually given to White Plains in 1831 following the merger of New York City and Albany Counties into one government under President James K. Polk's administration. The Panic of 1893 destroyed many businesses in Mamaroneck; however, new ones began to form quickly and continue operating until about 1920 when they too were impacted by economic hardship caused by World War I and later depression Era unemployment policies enacted by Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal Coalition government. After years of decline due to technological advances and changes in social mores brought on by World War II followed by postwar growth spurt across all parts of America—including postindustrial towns such as Buffalo—Mamaroneck reemerged as an economically vibrant community during the 1990s through initiatives such as its Steven Spielberg film industry initiative which has produced over 100 films there since 1995 primarily using local talent rather than Hollywood studios; along with other initiatives like restoration/repair work on several historic buildings including Saint John's Episcopal Church which had been badly damaged during Hurricane Sandy in 2012) In recent years there have been efforts involving both private individuals and foundations to update/restore many significant aspects of what had once been called "a dying village" (euphemism for a struggling small town) much like those seen throughout much larger inner city neighborhoods around similar economies experiencing rapid renewal or revitalization throughout North America during this time period often aided or facilitated by federal investment schemes known as “urban renewal” projects characterized generally speaking: i) principally within existing white working class communities adjacent particularlyalbeit peripherallyto comprehensive Black neighborhoods –as being essential componentsof broader national agendas designed ultimatelyto create American new majority urban areas characterizing contemporary American downtowns worldwide contemporaneouswith traditional European counterparts
