The Naval History and Heritage Command’s (NHHC) Museum of American Ships in Mamaroneck, New York, has a collection of naval gifts that date back to 1847. Some of the examples are from ships commanded by Commodore George Dewey or Captain John F. Smith, both of whom were Hudson River commanders during the War of 1812. Other gift items include cannons and rifles donated by stateside sailors in the 1840s and 1850s, as well as uniforms and other equipment given to warships by foreign governments. One significant Navy gift history event took place on October 20-21st, 1922 when Rear Admiral James W. Richardson presented Commander in Chief Hawaiian Islands with a suite of Honorary Awards for their support during World War I. The recipients included Rear Admiral Harry Sinkford (CG HI), Rear Admiral David Lowther (CB HI), Commodore John Pogue (CGN), General William Totten (USMC), Brigadier General Franklin Kapp (USMC), Major General Roy Dyer (USAF) and Lieutenant Colonel James Halsey(CO WWI). The occasion was also attended by many high-ranking naval officers from around the world including Director of Naval Personnel Adm Cmdr Raymond Lefebvre, First Sea Lord Sir Ernest Bevin, Vice Admiral Cecil Danceaux, Commodore Jacob Eickenkamp(CVA USN) and Rear Admiral George Glynwood.(RNVR). Since 1922 there have been other major Navy Gift History events such as the presentation of an Honourary Award to then-Captain Harry Sinkford CBHI at our museum on October 20th 2006;presentation of an Honorary Award to Rear Admirals David Lowther CBHI & Roy Dyer CO WWI at our museum on October 21st 2009;the presentation of a plaque in memory of Commodore John Pogue CJNI at our museum on November 7th 2018

Mamaroneck is a small town in upstate New York, located on the eastern side of the Adirondack Mountains. The population was 9,822 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Monroe County. The first European settlement in what would become Mamaroneck was made by colonists from England in 1624. The town was named for Marquis de Lafayette, who had come to America as a volunteer soldier during the American Revolution. Mamaroneck's growth began slowly but steadily over the next several decades, and it reached its peak around 1800 when it had a population of 17,000. However, after a series of natural disasters caused by earthquakes in 1811 and 1812, Mamaroneck's residents began to flee their homes for safety. Over time, however, Mamaroneck grew back significantly and attained its previous level of prosperity by 1830. During prohibition period (1904-1921), many businesses were closed due to lack of available liquor licenses; this led to some social unrest which may have contributed to future political instability in the area.

The USS Maine was torpedoed and sunk by Japanese torpedoes while attempting to enter harbor; this event is considered one of history’s greatest naval disasters. 3) The USS John F Kennedy – On July 16th, 1963, US president John F Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas Texas; this event is often cited as being one of the deadliest moments in American history. As a result, many feel that JFK's presidency had an impact on military spending and national security issues throughout his term. 4) The Nimitz-class submarines – These boats were designed specifically for warfare against surface ships and have become well known for their capabilities in anti-ship warfare (ASW). They are also incredibly versatile - being able to travel at depths up to 460 meters (1,500 feet). Two examples from recent years include HMS Queen Elizabeth II's visit to Japan in 2014 and USNS Gambia's launch into service in 2017.
The USS Constitution (Navy ship) is a United States Navy ship that has been deployed in numerous operations, both during peace time and wartime. The USS Constitution's history begins with its commissioning on July 17, 1814 from the Brooklyn Navy Yard. She served as part of the United States fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar on October 1, 1805 and won her first battle against HMS Guerriero off Havana on November 16, 1807. In 1860 she was transferred to the Confederate navy and played a significant role in the Battle of Fort Sumter. After Reconstruction ended in 1865 she served as an oil tanker until she was sold for scrapping in 1895.
Mamaroneck, New York is a small town in upstate New York on the Hudson River. The name means "place of many mountains" in the Lenape language. The first settler in what is now Marmaroneck was Nicholas de Montresor, who arrived about 1624. He and his brother founded the village of Mount Hope on Decatur Creek, northwest of present-day Marmaroneck. The village grew rapidly and by 1790 it included 546 residents, making it one of the largest villages east of Pennsylvania. It also had a schoolhouse, a post office, and a Anglican church (the only one in the area). Mamaroneck's growth slowed during the 19th century because its location made it difficult to get transportation to other parts of upstate New York; nonetheless, by 1870 it had 812 residents and was still growing rapidly. In 1877–78 an act were passed that created an incorporated village with powers similar to those granted to townships within State counties. This gave Marmaroneck more autonomy than any other village within state government; however, some residents continued to enjoy privileges derived from their place of residence such as mail service and electrical services not available to other villagers. In 1898–99 there was another growth spurt due to improved transportation links through Lake George; this time Marmaroneck reached 1,500 residents by 1910 and became known as one of the leading agricultural communities in Upstate New York. However, World War I interrupted these trends; after hostilities ended Marmaroneck's population dropped back below 500 until relatively recently when recent arrivals have again boosted its size above 600 people (though still behind Niagara Falls’s 2,000-person population).
