Mamaroneck is a town in Rockland County, New York, United States. The population was 21,878 at the 2000 census. The name comes from the Mohawk word manaronek, meaning "a meadow by the bay." It was laid out in 1792 and became part of Rockland County in 1825. The village of Mamaroneck began as a small post office on February 14, 1825, within the present-day town of Mamaroneck. The first settler to arrive in what is now Mamaroneck was Hiram Stevens. He came with his family from Connecticut and built a cabin on a hill overlooking the bay near where today's Village Square stands. In 1827, he sold land east of the current Village Square to John Fenton for $2 per acre. In 1830, Samuel Morse bought property west of what is now Village Square for $5 per acre from Fenton and laid out a town there called Farleyville. It started as a small settlement but quickly grew into one of the most important villages in upstate New York because it had an excellent location between Albany and Poughkeepsie on Lake George; it also had good access to transportation via roadways and canals. In 1833, Congressman Isaac Brock issued an order creating Rockland County which included portions of what are now Mamaroneck and neighboring towns including North Hempstead (now part ofEaston) and West Nyack (now part of Fresh Meadows). The order made Rockland County one hundredth anniversary older than New York State! AsRockland Countys territory increased its size through annexations during the 19th century various other villages were established around these larger centers including East Hampton (1839), Upton (1845), Spring Valley (1849), Allston (1856), North Ossining(1912) & South Ossining(1922).
