Lynbrook is a small town in the westchester county of New York, about 15 miles northwest of New York City. The population was 5,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the city of New York. The town is named for Major General James Lynbrook (1767-1835), an American Revolutionary War general and colonel from Westchester County who fought on Lord Cornwallis' army in 1781. The name may be derived from the Dutch word "Lynck" meaning a meadow or field; or it may be inspired by British General John Burgoyne's surrender at Saratoga Springs in 1777, which led to his own exile from America. In 1692, one of Sir Walter Scott's novels was set in Lynbrook and its surrounding area including Pinckneyville and Sycamore Shoals; that year also saw the first fulling of woolen fabric here. In 1813, when Ulysses S. Grant became President of the United States, he visited Lynbrook on vacation and ordered all military supplies brought overland to Fort Washington (later White Plains) so that they could not be stored at Albany because Congress had passed a law prohibiting such stores within 1/4 mile of any public buildings. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces burned down much of Lynbrook while retreating from Union forces through what is now Valhalla Cemetery & Memorial Park east of town line - this event remains commemorated by Confederate veterans as "the burning of Lynbrook".
