The name is said to be derived from an obsolete term meaning "upstream place" or "upper stream". The first European settlers in what is now Lynbrook were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1624. For many years until 1814, it was part of the province of Albany and the county of Kings. In that year, it became a separate municipality and was named for General JohnLynch (1759-1825), one of the heroes of the American Revolution and one of its chief architects. ranching began on large tracts of land west of town in the early 19th century; these properties still form much of Lynbrook's periphery today. A post office called Lynbrook existed from 1819 to 1857. declined after moving east to Watertown during the 1850s; however, it reestablished itself as a post office three times before finally closing in 1907 due to consolidation within New York State . In 1895, businessman George Prentice donated 2 million acres (8 km²) along Lake Ontario to be used as open space – this area now forms much of what constitutes downtown Lynbrook.
