The area now known as Lynbrook was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624 and became a full town in 1795. Full incorporation as a village occurred on February 26, 1853. The name of the original town may be derived from an Indian word meaning "fine meadow." Over time, other names were given to it including: Blue Lake, Brookside Heights, and Glenview Park. The predominant economic activity in Lynbrook has been manufacturing since its early years with primary industry being agriculture until the late 1800s when it shifted to textiles and leather products. Manufacturing jobs have slowly diminished over time but are still present in various sectors such as plastics and aerospace engineering. Lynbrook is a town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 5,636 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Long Island City–Brooklyn Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to reach Lynbrook was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. In 1664, Anthony Johnson founded a mill here on the then-land granted by Sir George Carteret to him and his son John. The mill was destroyed by British forces during the Revolutionary War but its ruins still stand today near where Route 9 crosses the hamlet's border with Sayville. In 1803, James De Witt Landis purchased from Anthony Johnson some of what is now Lynbrook from Nicholas Biddle for £1,000 (). He named it after himself: De Witt Manor (now part of Sayville). In 1825, he sold land to Joshua Hackett for £2,500 ().hackett had been born in Lynnfield and raised there before coming to Nassau County as a teenager in 1795 and buying land hereabouts. Hackett developed this new community around a small church and school which he built on Church Street between Westchester Avenue and East Main Street (now Third Avenue). His mills were among the first on Long Island to be powered by steam engines; they continued functioning until 1938. He also became one of its largest landowners through his purchase of large tracts of upland territory north of Brooklyn Heights that lay within what is now Lynbrook village boundaries; these acquisitions included most notably parts of present-day Sayville as well as much of Hicksville and North Plainsboro east of Breezy Point Road/Route 9 southward into Collinwood Township (now Glen Rock) villages; together these areas constituted more than two-thirds all the land within contemporary Lynbrook limits having been acquired sinceHackett's death in 1888 at age 87 years old. Hackett remains an important figure in local history because not only did he contribute significantly to civic life but also his memory continues to be invoked whenever decisions are made about developing or expanding Lynbrook village boundaries - matters currently being hotly debated following his death last week at age 94 years old.
