The Lynbrook Army Garrison was established in 1812 and served as a military post until it was closed in 1898. The Garrison is significant for its role in the American Revolution, and for its connection to Captain John Montgomery of the 1st York County Regiment who fought at Saratoga and Princeton. The Garrison also played a role in the Battle of Long Island in 1776, and later became involved with the British forces during the War of Independence. In 1875, the Garrison was reactivated as an infantry regiment under command of Major-General George Armstrong Custer. After World War I, it served as an artillery regiment before disbanding in 1922. Today, the Lynbrook Army Garrison remains a significant historical site located within New York City’s Upper West Side neighborhood. It offers visitors a unique perspective on American history through exhibits related to both local and global events from throughout history; as well as tours of its buildings which house artifacts from both pre-Revolutionary times up to World War II.
