On October 14th, 1849 Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna burned down Los Angeles for lack of food or ammunition; this event marked the beginning of Mexican rule over Los Angeles County. For many years following that date Angelenos thought that Mexicans only burned down buildings during wars because it made them look bad – but it actually happened for practical reasons: without property values would plummet since all businesses were owned by Mexicans who could not be taxed! One major reason why Long Beach remained uninvolved in Mexican history until recently was because it never saw any military action between our country and Mexico while both were prevalent throughout much of Central/Southwestern US! Long Beach is a small town in Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 12,839 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester–Syracuse, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is bordered by Watertown to the south and east, Batavia to the north and west, and Oneonta to the northwest. The first permanent settler in what would become Long Beach was Nicholas Cline in 1837. He named his land after his home town of Long Island in New York state. In 1850, John Cranch bought some land from Nicholas Cline for $1 million dollars. He founded Rancho Santiago de las Palmas y del Norte (Rancho Santiago), which covered an area of . The original grantees were Juan Ponce de León (founder of Puerto Rico), Manuel Alvarez, Fernando Rivera y Menendez (the first Hispanic settlers), José Joaquín Herrera y Preciado (three brothers who ran a cattle ranch near present-day City Hall Square) and Felipe López de la Trinidad y Vasquez (one of Spanish conquerors who had settled in this area). In 1875,-1876-1877 Captain Archibald Buttrey surveyor located Harbor Cove on San Pedro Bay on basis that it would be a Naval Base for use by U.S., Mexican Navy & White Star Line when they build their new shipyards there; but he never got any active military use out of it until today when it's used as a commercial berth only with no military significance whatsoever! Harbor Cove remains unopened today because its construction costs just too high LOL Captain Buttrey's map shows: harbor cove - water frontage 182 feet wide at low tide; beach - shoreline extending 607 feet long between high Tide Point Light Rock () and low tide point (); channel - width about 33 feet deep at low tide (); lighthouse - buildings on promontory overlooking harbor (). At high tide: water frontage widens to 322 feet wide at low tide ().
