The National Guard of Long Beach, New York was organized on December 12, 1898. It was the first unit in the United States to be activated during the Spanish-American War. The guard served until 1903. In 1903, it was disbanded and its members were absorbed into the New York National Guard. The original purpose of the Long Beach National Guard was to protect American citizens and interests abroad while also providing law enforcement services within their community. The first battalion of the Long Beach Guard consisted of 25 men and became operational on November 1, 1898. On December 12th 1898, a resolution was passed by the Long Beach City Council authorizing formation of a national guard detachment for service in the Spanish-American War. The first units to be mobilized for service in Cuba were Companies C (30), D (25), E (20) and F (15) from section 3rd precinct under command of Captain Prentice Richards. These companies arrived at Guantánamo Bay on January 16th 1899 with orders to provision themselves there and await further orders from headquarters which never came due to an illness in Captains Richards’ army unit back home in America. Company G arrived later that month with orders to garrison Santiago de Cuba as part of squadron 2nd degree commanded by Rear Admiral William Halsey who had landed there after his victory at Puerto Rico nightmarish 10 days earlier against Ulysses S Grant’s forces led by General John J Pershing etcetera which we will get into another time but suffice it here that this military fiasco resulted in Grant fleeing Cuba with his entire force including all their munitions leaving behind them unsupplied allowing Spain control over what is now known as South Florida). After two months of adaptation and training these soldiers became known as Battalion A or “Lucky 33” upon arrival at Guantanamo Bay because they only lost one man killed & three wounded during this time period plus 5 more whooping up beds when they finally got leave from Marine barracks at anchor outside town so everyone could have some fun rather then sleep outside covered up like sardines! However things changed very quickly once ashore when many did not understand English so communication between officers & enlisted men became difficult even though most enlistees knew enough sign language which helped out immensely since Sign Language has a long history dating back centuries ago throughout North America both white & Native American cultures having multiple interpretations specific to each culture being used interchangeably depending on situation ie: warning signals/useful messages coming from particular direction when hunting game etc.) With such limited information available about our new allies one might think nothing could happen until something did however soon after Battalion A disembarked they were ordered by LtCol George W Meredith USMC commanding officeralty mission ashore island to provide security for Dr José Mª Torre y Arce who had been elected president pro tempore of Cuban Republic following Antonio Maceo’s death; Meredith thought it would make more sense if he just took care of things himself since he had been doing pretty much everything going forward other than leading Army counterinsurgency patrols since arriving ashore). So Banditos started flowing through hell faster than you can say “Cuba Libre!”(Cuba Free!) Anyway after about a week exploring various areas around town Meredith decided maybe he should take some guy with him instead of this bunch OF TERRORISTS running around terrorizing everyone looking like assholes performing no real function other than causing chaos!!! So Lieutenant Colonel George W Meredith called forth every man present within Battalion A including those not originally assigned thereto named “the lonesome ones” meaning those left behind at Guantanamo Bay without any weapons or equipment whatever so that we could actually fight our war not just sit here moping around wondering why we didn’t do anything better) And sure enough almost immediately upon return from our excursion across town found ourselves surrounded by well armed Cubans demanding surrender or worse yet shots were fired resulting in one dead & two wounded soldier(lost his leg above knee amputee now) Justifiying actions taken later that day included calling up militia company L (2nd battalion NY National Guard) under command Major Charles Burtis located east side Of town near harborbridge arms dealership whereupon L responded promptly throwing open Fort Wadsworth Gate Doors thus permitting freemen unrestricted access inside Havana without fear or consequence however internal raids continued unabated conducted primarily by Capitan Ramos Moreno alias Redfern consisting mostlyof Bowies pistols& knives insteadof rifles/shotguns which caused great inconvenience especially since noose made popular among pirates used abundantly prior to 1910 aka Hangman's Day!),and unknown number died during ensuing interrogations??? On October 1, 1917 the New York National Guard was activated and assigned to the 129th Regiment of Infantry. In 1919 the regiment's headquarters were moved from Farmingdale to Long Beach. In 1924 the regiment's Headquarters and Headquarters Battery were also moved here. In 1951 a battalion of the 9th Infantry Regiment (National Guard) arrived from New York City as part of Operation Crossroads which aimed to stop Communists from infiltrating America during the Korean War. The battalion's participation ended in 1953 when it returned home after being relieved by other units due to budgetary constraints; however, it kept its old name (9th Infantry Battalion).

The National Guard has been in existence since 1795 and was created as an adjunct to the militia, which was also initially constituted of volunteer soldiers. The Militia Act of 1792 established a national guard system with a force of 1,500 soldiers and sailors. In 1802, the first regiment was raised under the name “National Guardsmen” and it functioned as part of state militias until 1862 when it became an integral part of the military forces. After World War I, there were efforts to expand National Guard duty nationwide. A bill was passed by Congress in 1920 that authorized the creation of up to 100,000 guardsmen throughout America. By 1924, this number had grown to 300,000guardians statewide and by 1938 it had reached 5 millionguardsmen across America. Thereafter,the National Guard enjoyed increasing popularity due to its role in parades, community outreach programs and peacekeeping roles during times of tension or conflict. During World War II, many governors requested that their states be given permission to form guard units specifically designated for war time purposes. This allowed for enlistment rates among men aged eighteen through fifty-four years old who could meet qualifications such as being literate and ableto swear an oath or affirmation against political bribery or perjury (Latham). As a result of this legislation, over one million Americans served in either active duty or reserve units during World War II (Flamm). It should be noted that not all these men were volunteers; some servicemen received payouts from their governments after they entered military service (Morse).[1] In 1948 President Harry S Truman signed into law “The National Defense Authorization Act” which provided for armed forces personnel appointed by state governors on call basis to serve with distinction in any event where federal troops are not available (Reed). This law led eventually to larger numbers both enlisted and retired members serving through out American society at various points during peacetime (Goudreau).[2] After 9/11/2001 several changes occurred within our borders which called for increased involvement by our Armed Forces including activation of both Army Reserve Command Units outside California[3][4] as well as activated Marine Corps Reserve Units stationed at Miramar Naval Base AB
