Long Beach, New York is a town in Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 30,651 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is taken from its location on Long Island Sound and originated as part of East Hampton Village. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Long Beach were fishermen who began exploring the area in 1609. They named their settlement after Bishop John Woolley of Canterbury and his family's farm on the sound. In 1764, Major General George Washington and his army marched through Long Beach on their way from Manhattan to Staten Island; they stopped at the village for dinner. Afterward, General Washington ordered Colonel Nicholas Towle to build a stockade around the village for protection against Indian attack. In 1814, when Commodore Daniel Butterfield took possession of Long Beach from Spain during the Mexican–American War, he renamed it San Diego de Ayacucho after Captain José Antonio Ramírez y Acosta (1765-1821), one of his commanders during that war. However, this change did not take effect until 1841 when Mexico ceded California to America following her defeat in the Mexican–American War. When California became an American state in 1850, Ayacucho reverted back to Mexico but San Diego continued being called Ayacucho until 1912 when it became part of Long Beach proper. In 1875–76 there was a major fire which destroyed most of downtownLong beach including much of the original Stockade built by Colonel Nicholas Towle more than three decades earlier as part of defense against Indians Attacks

In 1916, Long Beach was incorporated as a village and later merged with Baldwin Township to form Baldwin-Long Beach Township. In 1951, the township became an independent city. As an independently elected mayor from 1951 until his death in 1978, Adolph Jaffe played a key role in developing Long Beach into one of the most vibrant cities in California. He is also credited with popularizing firefighting techniques in New York City during that time period
