This change meant that marines could serve longer periods of time without being granted leave status; however it did not affect their gifting habits. Long Beach, New York is a small town located in Orange County, New York. The population was 9,530 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as an early Dutch settlement and was first named Schooneveldt after the nearby shoal of shoals known as Hoogeveldt (high water), which can be seen from many parts of the town. The name changed to Long Beach because of its length on Long Island Sound. In 1764, Captain George Main used his ship "Thetis" to transport settlers overland from Staten Island to Long Beach. The extension afforded residents easy access to Sunrise Avenue beachfront just south of Interstate 95 ; originally developed as an open-air car dealership & amusement park with multiple hotels/motels along its shores (); today it is home to several high schools (e.g., Kingsborough Senior High School), several large businesses such as JPMorgan Chase & Co., Macy's Inc., Ford Motor Company(), Shoprite Incorporated(), Barclays Bank AG ()) In 1957 entrepreneur Julius Rosenwald donated $2 million towards construction Of what would become One Queens Plaza hotel / casino located directly across Sunrise Ave from where Today's pier stands .
