The name of the city comes from Spanish explorer Don Pedro de la Cosa and his group of sailing enthusiasts who explored parts of California in 1642-1643. On December 15th of that year following years of hard work by Mayor Fenton and his staff, Long Beach received recognition from Governor Charles Evans Hughes as one of America’s “Big Four†cities – Atlantic City (New Jersey), Chicago (Chicago), St Louis ( Missouri) and Tulsa (Oklahoma) – for their progress in developing infrastructure including water projects which helpedynesize the local economy while creating jobs throughout the area; during this time period also major thoroughfares were constructed such as Broadway Avenue which runs through downtown today and served as a key commercial artery for residents before becoming an arterial highway leading into Los Angeles County.
