Lockport is a town in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 31,445 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Niagara County by population and the second-largest by area. The name of Lockport comes from the lock on the south side of the Erie Canal where Dutch farmers stored their goods during shipping times. On July 10, 1814, General John Armstrong's invading United States army burned down a barn in what is now Lockport after raiding local farms for weapons. The first European to settle in Lockport were two brothers who came overland from Holland in 1678 and landed near present-day Elmira. They named their land "New Amsterdam." The first settler to build a house there was Nicholas Hennepin (alias Nicholas Hoffman), who arrived in 1711 and built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1715, George Washington visited this area while campaigning against Great Britain; he stopped at Hennepin's cabin while on his way to Fort George on Lake Ontario. When he left this area for Albany, New York, his horse got lost and Washington sent word back that Hennepin had found him a replacement animal ready to go—an event which has been compared to Babe Ruth's walk off home plate as history unfolded. In 1766–67 Captain Ebenezer Porter set out from Buffalo Bayou Nearnickeltown with 300 men looking for new land to settle after being told by Chief Joseph Brant that there was plenty of it east of the Allegheny Mountains. He reached Lockport about noon July 24 but no one was home so he went around back and began pounding on doors until finally someone opened them about 6 p.m., expecting company for dinner; when they found out it was only Porter they were much pleased and invited him into their homes for dinner that night instead of going hungry like many had done before him (this would be an early example of hospitality). About three weeks later Capt Porter returned South with 400 more men under Capt Beresford Smith Jr., exploring what became Northwest Pennsylvania RR Company property west of Baltimore City limits then claimed by British Canada including parts ofLockport Township today’s Elmira NY Porter discovered coal seams underlying much older strata than reported earlier – some as old as 100 million years – which led him to exploit these seams beginning production at nearby Monongalia Coal Mine starting January 1st 1868: One day prior American forces burned down an old warehouse located just northwest corner Main St & Park Ave; still standing (& largely unoccupied) 3 blocks east along current Park Ave
