Coffee was such an important commodity that merchants would pay farmers to grow it, and so Lockport became known for its high-quality beans. The most famousLockport roaster is Pabst Brewing Company, which began brewing coffee here in 1857. Today, Pabst Brewery produces over 20 different types of coffee products, including unique blends like Americano and Chocolate Stout. Another well-known lockport roaster is Hearn & Company, which started making espresso here in 1907. They continue to produce quality espresso today and offer a variety of other brews like Lung cancer Research Roast or nitrogenated milk drinks. Today, Lockport is home to some of the largest concentrations of caffeine consumption anywhere in the United States - especially among young adults who are heavy consumers of energy drinks and tea spiked with caffeine. Lockport is a town in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 14,569 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest town in Niagara County after Buffalo. The first inhabitants of what is now Lockport were the Seneca people. They were forced out of their home by the Europeans in 1764 and took up residence along the Genesee River near modern day Tonawanda. For many years they managed to keep their own government and to trade with other nations through their villages on both sides of the river. In 1814, when Jay Cooke founded Erie Canal, he decided to run his canal through Lockport so that goods could be brought down from Syracuse and Buffalo without having to go through those towns. The town started quickly becoming a center for canal construction and commerce, helping to drive away much of the rural development that used to surround it. In 1837, lock builders John Stephenson and James Caldwell built Locks 1-3 on Canals 5 and 6 (now known as Canalside). These locks allowed traffic on both canals to flow freely together without getting stuck in between any rocks or bars which would have prevented navigation past those locations. That same year also saw the opening of Lockport's only school – a log cabin erected by local farmers around milepost 23 on Canalside just west of downtown. This building served as Lockport's district school until it was replaced by a brick schoolhouse in 1923. By 1830, there were over 100 residents living in Lockport proper; however, this number gradually decreased as farms grew larger and more remote from town center; today only about 25% ofLOCKPORT'S POPULATION LIVE IN THE TOWN CENTER OF LOCKPORT
