The Lockport Air Force Base, now the New York Air National Guard's 131st Wing, is home to the Wright brothers' original airplane factory in 1911. The base was founded as a military airport and served as such until 1912 when it became an airfield for the United States Army. In 1916, it became the home of America's first fighter squadron. In 1942, during World War II,Lockport AFB was one of five Consolidated B-24 Liberator aircraft production plants in the USAAF. In 1948, Lockport AFB became an active military installation and saw service in both Korean War and Vietnam Wars before being closed in 1992. The wing's mission changed from air defense to airlift duties with KC-135 Stratotankers supporting Operation Desert Storm in 1991 and Operation Gulfstream II operations following 9/11. Since its closure there have been efforts to reestablish a presence at Lockport AFB through various means such as leased land or use of facilities on adjacent Pembroke Island Naval Station which is also used by Navy aviation units. As of 2019 there are no plans to reopen lockport AFB though some discussions continue
Lockport is a town in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 12,913 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the seven towns in Niagara County and is one of the most rural areas in western New York. The town was originally laid out by two German farmers, David Muller and Johann Friedrich Schneider, who named it after their home village of Loccumont on Lake Ontario. The first settlers arrived around 1800 and built log cabins near what was then known as locks on the east side of Lockport Harbor. About 1825, John Stephenson came to Lockport from nearby Tonawanda with his family to open a general store and tavern there. In 1829, Jesse Hurd set up a blacksmith shop in what is now part of Main Street. In 1830, Michael Hague started a distillery called Clinton's stills which became world-renowned for its whiskeys (the first commercial whiskey production in North America). A post office was established at Lockport in 1838; it remained in operation until 1861 when it was discontinued due to lack of mail service between Buffalo and Lockport. In 1845 James Bogue opened a shoe store on Main Street which became an important trade center for the community. In 1865, Gideon Welles founded Welles' Drugs Company on Elmwood Avenue which continues to be one of lockport's largest employers today. An important agricultural industry began to emerge around this time with growing demand for grain caused by increased travel among people seeking new opportunities abroad during the Civil War era;lockport’s local mills processed wheat into flour and feed while other industries developed such as chemicals manufacturing and printing presses using local limestone mined from nearby hillsides By 1870 lockport had 4 banks including 2 national banks with branch locations throughout the town . By 1900 there were 10 businesses operating within lockPORT including 5 stores/banking institutions , 3 hotels/motels , 1 grocery store/cafeteria , 1 machine tool company/press operations . In 1814, the town was organized as a village under the name of Lockport. It was during the American Civil War that Lockport became most active in supporting the Union cause, with many residents joining in military service. In 1865, after the war ended, Lockport reverted back to its original name of Lockport Village. In 1925, the village merged with the neighboring town of Rome to form what is now called Rome-Lockport Township. During World War II,Lockport served as a manufacturer's plant for DuPont products such as nylon rope and thread. The plant closed in 1948 but it has been recently restored and is now open to visitors as a museum
