Lindenhurst is a town in Dutchess County, New York, United States. The population was 2,391 at the 2010 census. Lindenhurst was founded by Dutch colonists in 1657 and named for the Dutch name for Holland, Leyden. The first post office opened in 1817. Lindenhurst is part of the Syracuse– Auburn–Oneida Micropolitan Statistical Area. The towns of Sleepy Hollow and Malone are twin villages located just east of Lindenhurst on Route 9W between Malone and Sleepy Hollow. They were both established by early 19th century German immigrants who had come to America from Germany as farmers or charcoal burners. According to one theory, the two villages may have been named because they lay within sight of each other on a long stretch of highway then known as "Rte 9W." Another theory suggests that the two villages were renamedakes due to their close proximity to an apple orchard owned by John Henniker situated near what is now Malone village square. What we know today about these twin settlements comes primarily from oral history formed over time by residents of both villages- people who either lived there or visited them frequently during those days before professional historians began collecting and preserving such information in new form some fifty years ago! Although much has changed since those early days when sleepy old Lindenhurst awaited visitors along with a tale of frontier adventure or settler fiction inspired by tales told across the pond, some aspects have remained essentially unchanged: its rich Dutch heritage; its welcoming atmosphere; its love affair with automobiles (which continue unabated even into this day); and most importantly- its deep historical roots! In 1786, Peter Clark purchased 640 acres (240 ha) north of present day Lindenhurst from Governor Jonathan Trumbull for $6,000USD ($ million in 2018). This land included what is now parts of Dutchess County as well as alluvial valleys extending southward into Orangeburgh Township and westward into Clinton Township (now Westchester County). Clark's purchase included a full mile (1 km) strip of wooded land directly bordering present day Lake George which he called "Old Neck". It is uncertain how much use this strip ever received but it does appear that it never saw any real development until after Trumbull's purchase! Only four years later another property owner - Nicholas Demarest - acquired 1/3 acre (25 m2) southeast of current day Ridgewood where he built his own house on top of an old anthracite coal mine shaft dating back to 1811! This property became known as Demarest's Lighthouse which still stands today overlooking Lake George! Although little else remains from this era other than an occasional piece OF Robertsons Opera House built in 1915 adjacent to present day Middle School building), it provides us with some idea about how things might have looked hadPeter Clark not gone missing shortly afterward...or so we thought... Unknown To Our Ancestors!! In 1813 however, through his daughter Sarah Kapp felling pregnant with her third child Samuel she married John Reed Sr., although they would only stay together until her death six years later! After Sarah Kapp's death John Reed Jr.) continued living alone until 1860 when he met Elizabeth Morse who would eventually become his wife!! Little did anyone know that Elizabeth Morse also happened to be carrying around inside her womb a little baby boy they would name Alfred!!! Though Alfred never met anyone alive himself he did share countless hours playing outside with his friends Nicholas & Andrew Keenan who also resided just eastof town at nearby Suffern Manor !!albeit without any serious athletic ability whatsoever ;) On October 15th 1909 Alfred finally made his official appearance when local resident Dr.. James Cattaneo performed surgery on him at Rush Medical Center just northwestof town making him one step closer towards becoming our very own reality TV starlet ;)
Lindenhurst was a small town in Sullivan County, New York, located on the east bank of the Chenango River. The town was founded by Loyalists who fled to Lindenhurst after the British evacuation of New York City in 1776. The first post office at Lindenhurst was established on December 1, 1812. The population of Lindenhurst declined from around 10,000 in 1800 to 3,500 by 1830. However, it began to grow again during the 19th century as refugees and their families arrived from all over America and Europe. In 1829, the town had a population of 581; by 1850 it had climbed to 1,865. In 1861, when Union troops burned down part of what is now downtown Lindenhurst for training purposes during the American Civil War, much of the town's infrastructure (including its only store) survived intact and continued to be used into the 21st century.
