Lindenhurst is a small town in Saratoga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. Lindenhurst is located on the border of Saratoga and Ontario counties. It is northeast of Ithaca. The first European settlers in what is now Lindenhurst were Dutch people who came to the area in 1614. They named the place "Hillegast". In 1797, a group of English Quakers established a farm here called "Plymouth Plantation" after their ship, Plymouth Rock. The original house still stands on Courthouse Road in Lindenhurst today and has been used as a museum and private home since then. In 1836, when New York State was created from parts of Albany and Onondaga Counties, part of its boundaries included land east of Cornell University which was then part of Ontario County; this included much of present-day Lindenhurst township. The village formed around this new center while still under British control until it became an independent municipality on December 15, 1838. The town of Lindenhurst, New York is a small community located in the westchester county district of New York. The population was 775 at the 2010 census. Lindenhurst is one of two villages in western Clinton County and is bordered by the towns of Hornell on the north, Ithaca on the east, and Niskayuna on the south. It lay within what is now Westchester County until 1824 when it became part of Albany County. In 1898, it was merged with neighboring Village of Ithaca to form a combined village called Ithaca-Lindenhurst. Lindenhurst was founded in 1784 by Nicholas Coles as an agricultural stop on what would become the Erie Canal route. The town started as a narrow strip of land between two hills that ran along the Erie Canal and today's Main Street runs through its center. George Washington stopped at Lindenhurst during hiscampaign for President in 1792 while travelling downriver from New York City to Albany. Coles named his new settlement after General George Washington because he felt he had been betrayed by then-President Thomas Jefferson when he refused to let Washington cross over into Canada with his army during the American Revolution. In 1824, when Albany County was divided into three parts, Lindenhurst became part of the newly created Westchester County and experienced rapid growth due to development around canal boat traffic and farming activities that continued until around 1920s when electric streetlights replaced gas lamps throughout most of rural western Clinton Counties

In 1830, Lindenhurst became a village and was incorporated as a town on December 12, 1830. On November 9, 1845, Lindenhurst lost its status as a village and became an incorporated city with a population of over 50,000 people.
