The Lindenhurst National Guard Museum was founded in 1978 by the New York State National Guard. The museum is located on the grounds of Fort Drum in Lindenhurst, New York. The New York National Guard was first organized in 1664. The unit was later renamed the 7th Regiment of Foot, and then the 5th Regiment of Foot in 1795. The regiment was disbanded in 1802. In 1903, it was reactivated as the 2nd Brigade of the 1st Divisional Infantry Militia and became part of the New York Army National Guard. Lindenhurst is a small town in upstate New York, located about 20 miles south of Syracuse. The population was 1,851 at the 2000 census. Lindenhurst is one of the oldest villages in Upstate New York and has been inhabited since 1776. He named his new property "Lindenhurst" after his family's home at Lichaamont on Long Island (now Islip), which he had rebuilt following damage by a storm in 1623. A post office called Lindenhurst was established in 1838, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. The first store opened at the corner of Main Street and State Road 495 in 1881. At that time, there were just 12 settlers living hereabouts. In 1892, John Fenton founded an agricultural cooperative with other farmers near Norwichville; this organization became known as Fenton’s Corners Cooperative Store & Creamery Co-operative Society Ltd., later changed to Empire Creameries Incorporated.. In 1905, when Fenton sold all his shares to George Hahnemann Jr., Lindenhurst became part of Empire Dairy Corporation which operated a large milk farm until it merged with ConAgra Foods Incorporated in 1986.. Today, Lindenhurst remains primarily an agricultural community with a few dozen residents; however, its historic center retains much of its character including its original wooden schoolhouse which still stands as a museum today. The village also features several streets named after local pioneers such as George Hahnemann Sr., Nicholas Linderhof and John Fenton Sr.; these include Main Street North, West Side Highway and East Side Highway.

Construction began soon after and finished within three years – making it one of the quickest railroads ever built. As part of the project, several mills were built along with churches and other buildings around town. Today Lindenhurst is home to a few hundred residents; most are descendants of those who lived there during its early days. The village has experienced some major changes over time; for example, it was annexed by Syracuse in 1922 and then by Rome in 1936 before becoming an independent municipality again in 1990. Some local businesses still operate today such as Bankers Trust & Co., Post Office (founded 1886), First National Bank (1902), Strouds Pharmacy (opened 1924), Dairy Queen (opened 1957), Bamberger's Department Store (opened 1969) and American Legion post office (started 1921).
