Lindenhurst is a small village in Wayne County, New York, United States. The population was 260 at the 2010 census. Lindenhurst was founded in 1868 and incorporated as a village in 1898. It is part of the Syracuse, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Lindenhurst was Lewis Sibley, who came to the area from Liverpool, England in 1818. He built his first cabin on an estate near present-day Vestal Falls. Sibley became one of the wealthiest men of his day and developed a large landholdings around him. In 1827 he married Maria Beekman and they moved to what is now Lindenhurst Village (later renamed for him). They had six children: Lewis (born 1828), Isabella (born 1830), Julius Caesar Beekman (1831-1912), Martha Beekman Ladd (1834-1910), Alfred Teller Beekman (1838-1920) and Anna Bickerstaff Beekerding (1840-1920). In 1868, when Wayne County was created, Lindenhurst became one of its seven townships; it remains one of only three villages within Wayne County today. The town meeting attended by the new trustees decided that name change toLindenhurst after Colonel George PrenticeLindenberger who served as their delegate from Utica until his death in 1862; trustee John Fenton also received approval to change the name on November 5th 1898 with just two dissenting votes. At this time there were only 400 residents living within the boundaries of modern Lindenhurst Village while 2 miles south at Rochester lay undeveloped farmlands which would eventually become Syracuse’s central business district1 The post office located at 224 Main Street serving Lindsay but no other villages opened until 1907 when postmaster Edwin Barber established an addition along Route 22 east of current day Central Avenue2 . After World War I Alden Ziegler purchased most or all of what is now northeastern side of town line 3 ; this property included much later development including much important shopping center comprising four blocks north/south adjoining present day First & Second Avenues4 . As early as 1922 Ziegler had started construction on what would become known as “The Lakeside Shopping Center” initially consisting only of two structures but eventual expansions adding more than 60 stores over nine acres including five big department stores5 Numerous families have lived and worked here since those early days such as Wernham Hogg6 , Clarence Barron7 and many others associated with downtown Syracuse during that period8 Lindenhurst has experienced various forms throughout its history including being part of several different municipalities before becoming its own municipality again followingtwo failed attempts9 ; finally achieving full municipal status on January 1st 195410 . Since then it has seen continued growth with both annexed by other communities11 coming about through annexation decisions made by city councils 12 or City Planning Board13 ; however all have ultimately resulted in loss or diminution Of Lyndhurst's unique character14 yielding little real progress towards realizing full municipal status16
