Lindenhurst, New York is a small town in the Hudson Valley of New York State. It has a population of about 5,000 and is located about 10 miles northwest of Albany. Lindenhurst was first settled by Germans in 1795. The village was laid out in 1835 and named for General Friedrich Wilhelm Lindenhaus (1763-1838), who served as an army general during the Napoleonic Wars. The town features a beautiful square known as "The Square" which is bounded by Main Street to the east, Court Avenue to the south, and Park Avenue to the west. The square also contains a number of buildings that were built between 1830 and 1837 including the old post office, schoolhouse, Lutheran church, and other local government buildings. Lindenhurst was a small town in Orange County, New York, located on the east side of the Hudson River. It is now part of the town of West Nyack. The name Lindenhurst is derived from Dutch Hendrik Linsenburgh and means "the Lily Pond". The first Europeans to visit Lindenhurst were French colonists who arrived in 1624. The area was part of Albany County until 1785 when it became Orange County. The early settlers included John Fenton, who built the first house in 1802; his son-in-law Peter Boyle; and Elijah Smith, who bought land from Moses Green in 1815. The population peaked at 1,500 in 1830 but declined during the 1830s and 1840s as waves of Irish immigrants arrived. In 1848, Increase Mather opened a gristmill which continued to operate until 1910. In 1834, local farmers formed the First Town Council to provide for their own needs within Lindenhurst limits as well as help with common problems such as irrigation and roads. A school was established in 1835 and a wharf was built nearby soon after. In 1840, an addition to the mill called "Edwards' Mill" became home to what is now known as White Sands Cemetery (later Arlington Cemetery). In 1850, local businessman Augustus Prentice donated land near present day Elmira for a new shopping center which would become known as Nordstrom's Department Store (now Macy's). The original store building still stands today and is used by Concord Township synaptic education programs between grades K-12th grade students from North End School District 205 Academy inside) . This building also houses East Side Magazine Museum run by Concord Township Historical Society since 1984-. A post office was established at Lindenhurst in 1850; it served primarily locals until 1865 when it became part of Albany Post Office system.
