Lindenhurst is a town in Clinton County, New York, United States. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse–Albany–Ionia, NY-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become Lindenhurst was Abram Dibble in 1795. The first post office was founded in 1802 and named for Captain John Lindenbaum of the frigate " USS Constitution ". In 1820, the settlement became a village. It was renamed Lindenhurst after Samuel H. Lyndehr, who donated land to the Village for $1 per acre (0.50 hectare). Lindenhurst has been called "The Athens of America". In 1836 it had an enrollment of 1,500; by 1860 it had grown to 10,000 and by 1870 it reached 15,000 people. Its rich agricultural history has resulted in many products being exported: wheat, cornmeal, appleseed oil and eggs are among those exported products today. Lindenhurst is home to two high schools: Canisius College and Stonington High School which are both private institutions with full undergraduate/graduate programs as well as professional training programs for teachers and other professionals. The towns main shopping center is located just outside of town off US 12 north on State Route 827 which allows easy access to most local businesses including several restaurants and small grocery stores as well as various type of retailers such as hardware stores etc...

The first store opened in 1827 and soon became an important commercial center for rural upstate New York. The village had two schools from 1830 until they were merged into one in 1851; until then, each familychooled their own children. In 1866, Village President James Auld donated land to build what would become Town Hall; construction began that year and finished three years later. This building served as both Village Hall and Town Office until it burned down in 1922. In 1955-1957, Lindenhurst voters approved a program which funded several projects including new streets open to traffic (including Route 9), better drainage systems (including one which diverted water away from Prospect Park), and a new high school (now Douglaston High School). These projects led to increased development around town including businesses like TJ's Pizza & Pasta, Lowe's Home Improvement Center, Gretsch Music Corporation - nowowned by ELR Piano - as well as new homes being built on much of the original grantland donated by James Auld himself! Today much of this original grantland still surrounds downtownLindenhurst while some newer developments have been built on more recent Grantland land such as Onondaga Lakefront Drive between 2nd Street South/Route 9 & 10th Avenue North!
