In the early 20th century, Lindenhurst was a center of air power in New York. Air force detachments were active here from 1917 until the end of World War II. In 1945, when the war ended, Lindenhurst became home to the first USAF Base in New York City. The base housed more than 4,000 personnel and played an important role in the Cold War period. Today, Lindenhurst is home to two USAF bases as well as a number of civilian organizations responsible for air defense and homeland security. The town has also become a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful scenery and historical significance.

Lindenhurst is a village in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 1,500 at the 2010 census. Lindenhurst is located on the southern border of Westchester County and is part of the Tri-State area. Lindenhurst has a rich history dating back to 1812 when it was named for Colonel John Lindenbaum who purchased land near present-day Peekskill. The first post office opened in 1814 and was called "Newburgh". In 1825, Lindenhurst became the town of Lindenhurst after it was granted town status by Governor David Dixon. The first school in what would become Lindenhurst opened in 1827. In 1860, an armory and arsenal were built at what is now Main Street and Broadway in what would become Lindenhurst. It served as a training ground for Union soldiers during the American Civil War. In 1865, major General Ulysses S Grant visited Lindenhurst while on his way to fight Sherman's forces in Georgia and ordered all arms stores be closed because he thought they were being used against Grant's army by Confederate troops who had infiltrated into New York City under cover of darkness. It wasn't until 1898 thatLindenhurst got its own post office which still operates today (Peekskill). In 1903, there was also a small agricultural community known as Clifton Forge withinLindenhurst proper but this too vanished around 1945 when much of the hamlet disappeared beneathdevelopment along Route 9/10 across from where it currently stands (now known as Valhalla Village). In 1931, Wendell Willkie ran for President as a Republican candidate against Franklin D Roosevelt on the ticket of America First Party with slogan "Bring Back Our Boys". During his campaign stop at Lindenhrusthe young Willkie told an audience gathered outsidethe Armory building about how he'd bring back $1 million dollars from Wall Street stock fraudster J.P Morgan to invest locally and create jobs hereabouts."I want to show you something very interesting," saidWillkie before pulling outa envelopecontaining pictures taken inside Mount Vernon Cemetery during Woodrow Wilson's presidency."These are picturesque little vignettes from our president resting among his loved ones," continuedWillkie before giving each individual photographer fifty dollars for their work." Lindenhurst is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 12,871 at the 2010 census. Lindenhurst is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. The first settlement in what is now Lindenhurst was founded by Jacob and Susanna Bauer in 1785. The name may derive from "Ling-en-houst," meaning "the place where there are woods." In 1821, John Fisk bought land at the junction of two roads near where present-day Route 128 crosses the Hudson River. He named his tract "Lindenhurst" after his family's home county of Suffolk, England. In 1824, Fisk donated land to the Village of Lindenhurst for its municipal center and school district; it became a part of Yonkers on July 1, 1825. On December 16, 1827, village trustees voted to change the name to "Lindenhurst". The first post office opened in Linderhurst on February 14th, 1830 under the name "Hastings". In 1864–65 (during Reconstruction), Jens Rasmussen (a Norwegian immigrant) developed an oil well at what is now route 128 and submitted a plat to Town Board with plans for an industrial park that would have included petrochemical plants and a distillery called Rasmussen’s stills which still stands today on Route 128 across from Starbucks coffee shop off exit 9A southbound from I-95 eastbound within sight of both Port Authority Bus Terminal & Newark Liberty International Airport
