Lancaster, New York is a small town located in the Catskills region of New York State. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most rural areas in Upstate New York. Coffee has been a part of Lancaster's history for as long as coffee has been enjoyed throughout the area. In 1824, Nicholas Bourbon opened the first store in Lancaster and soon began to sell coffee beans from his farm near what is now downtown Lancaster. His beans would go on to be sold under the name "Bourbon Coffee." In 1868, John Sauer opened his first grocery store in Lancaster and began selling coffee along with other items such as flour, eggs, butter, cheese and other groceries. By 1870, Sauer had built a large grocery store that still stands today at 5th and Market Streets in downtown Lancaster. At this time, Lancaster became known as "The Coffee Capital of America." Coffee started to become popular in America during the late 19th century when people started to move away from tea-based drinks like milk and hot water to coffee-based drinks like iced tea and cold beer. By 1893, Starbucks had opened its doors in Seattle and quickly became an industry leader with its delicious cups of Joe! It began as a small frontier town on the Susquehanna River and developed into a commercial center after railroads created transportation routes to the area. The city was founded by farmers in 1817 as Lancaster Station on what is now called Lancaster Avenue. The name came from another small frontier town in Onondaga County that had been renamed Lancaster for General Sir John Forbes after his victory over British forces at Kill Devil Hills in 1777. In 1835, the citizens of Lancaster petitioned Congress for incorporation as a village and were granted their request by President Andrew Johnson on November 12, 1835. The first mayor was Joseph Cramer (1824-1842). In 1870, when the present courthouse was built, it became one of only two municipalities in New York State to have such an impressive structure built without public funding - the other being Rochester, New York which received its own courthouse shortly thereafter. During World War II, Lancaster played an important role as one of five American cities located within strategic bombing ranges; it supplied munitions plants with aluminum ore and lead while also producing steel products for military use throughout Northeast Asia and Europe In 1949–50 when Interstate 95 bypassed downtown Lancaster along Old Route 9W (now Delaware Avenue), many residents left for greener pastures elsewhere but some stayed behind to celebrate what would be their new home’s landmark event –when I-95 crossed under downtown from south to north just east of where Delaware intersects Canal Street –the first time this had ever happened in Erie County . This unique event helped change not only Downtown Lancaster but also parts of Buffalo Niagara Falls which followed suit soon afterwards
