Lancaster, New York is a town of over 30,000 people located in the Catskills region of upstate New York. The population has grown rapidly over the past few decades and there are now more than 100 law enforcement officers working in Lancaster. It was once a small town with just a handful of policemen on staff. Today, Lancaster is one of the most crime-ridden towns in Upstate New York and its police department is one of the largest in the area. The first policeman to serve in Lancaster was Captain John Sweeny who arrived in 1812. At that time, there were only four policemen on staff and they were responsible for policing the town single-file. In 1822, Captain George Fenton replaced Captain Sweeny and he reported to headquarters at Fort Orange. From then until 1865, when Lieutenant Colonel James Wetherbee took office, Lancaster had no permanent officer other than captains and lieutenants serving as part of a brigade or detachment assigned to garrison duty throughout the county. In 1865, Lieutenant Colonel Wetherbee decided to make Lancaster an incorporated village and appointed Mr. Hickey as its first mayor. The first purpose-built police station was built on Elm Street within a year and it served as their Headquarters until 1921 when it was moved to Main Street where it still stands today. During World War II, local residents donated seven gasoline cans filled with gasoline used by soldiers for parades through town so that they could be lit from behind while walking down Elm Street! A gas station called The Station House was opened on Elm Street near present day High School during 1951 after donations from surrounding businesses enabled them to finance construction costs which included enlarging the building which still stands today! In 1978, Mayor Harry Weisman designated Main Street between Elm and Clinton Streets as Borough Square where citizens can enjoy free music concerts every second Saturday of each month starting June 1st through September 15th from 10am until 2pm! Since then, various events have taken place at Borough Square including: Independence Day celebrations (July 4th), Christmas tree lighting (December 25th), Earth Day ( April 22nd), summerfest ( July 12th ), 4 Corners Days festival ( August 14th ), Finally...the Police Department's annual Fourth Of July picnic( July 20th )!

Lancaster is the largest community in Erie County and one of the most populous towns in New York City. It is also home to the University of Pennsylvania's Dickinson School of Nursing and Health Sciences, which has a medical school affiliated with it. The first European settlers in Lancaster were Dutch traders and missionaries who came to North America in 1624-1625 as part of Hendrick Hudson's expedition. In 1701, Jameson brothers founded a small trading post on the North Branch Susquehanna River near what is now Lancaster. The Jamesons sold their holdings in 1753 to John Lawler for $2,000 cash. Lancaster was chartered as a borough on February 14th, 1814 by Governor George Clinton with 5 burgesses: Abraham Brown (owner of Great Lakes Flour Mills), Amos Allyn (founder of Allyn & Bacon meatpacking company), Benjamin Carhart (carpenter and builder; later mayor), Daniel Carpenter (merchant tailor; first Selectman; died 1826) and Nicholas Collins (justice of peace). On November 2nd 1830 Samuel Fenton donated land to form what is today Penn Square Park. On April 8th 1840 Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest named Lancaster "Fort Delaware" after his military victory over British forces at Fort Duquesne that year near Pittsburgh PA . In 1845 Colonel Augustus Biddle bought from William Hoadley 640 acres east of town for $10 per acre when Lancaster was still part of Montgomery County NY . Afterward it became part of Erie County NY . The Township became an incorporated village on December 12th 1888 by an act passed by the New York State Legislature due to its growth as an educational center during the late 1800s before becoming an independent city status on January 1st 1931 under Mayor Quincy Parsons with 1147 citizens . The building now known as Central Library began construction in 1895 on Main Street across from present day First Presbyterian Church when only two buildings existed within this area including South Hall located where Second Presbyterian Church stands today between Masonic Temple / Peoples Temple - just south side intersection then straight ahead onto current street name - Service Road/Parsons Avenue which leads into central business district
