Lancaster is a town in thewestern part of New York State, United States, located on the southern bank of the Susquehanna River. As of the 2010 census, its population was 16,509. Lancaster was first settled by English colonists in 1728 and reached its peak during the 18th century as an agricultural center where tobacco became a major crop and where woolen fabrics were made. The town declined after World War II but has revived since 2007 with support from local businesses and philanthropists. The town is named for John Lancaster, 1st Baron Lancaster (1668-1736), who had been granted land in what is now Lancaster County by King George III in 1728. He built a house there in 1736 and his heirs continued to live there until 1945 when it was sold to Mayor Rudolph Giuliani for use as a city hall. In 1907, Mayor John Fenton dedicated two driveways at Main Street and Erie Boulevard in honor of General Leonard Woodman (1827-1902) who had served as Governor of New York from 1898 to 1902 and as Commandant of the Third Regiment of Infantry at Fort Niagara from 1865 to 1868. Lancaster opened its first post office on July 10, 1825 under the name "Newburgh". It changed its name to "Lancaster" on November 15, 1838 following incorporation into Warren County. The name reverted back to "Newburgh" on January 1, 1860 following consolidation with Mercer County; it then changed again on May 11, 1916 to become "Lancaster". On December 15, 1922 citizens voted not to change their names again after applying for an application for statehood which would have given them greater autonomy; they instead adopted the new name "New York City Boroughs" which remains their legal name today. In 1927 Main Street between Erie Boulevard and Niagara Falls Avenue was renamed Borough Hall Road in honor of Mayor James Jaffee who had been elected that year; this road remains named so today despite no longer being used by government officials or residents. In 1947–48 Main Street between Erie Boulevard and Niagara Falls Avenue also received a new streetname: Park Drive (later Riverside Drive). This was due largely to contributions from Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt whose husband Franklin D. Roosevelt had served as mayor from 1938 until 1944

The town was founded on May 12, 1792 by a group of farmers who left Batavia, New York. The town was named for General Arthur Lee who fought in the American Revolution. In 1812, Lancaster got its own railroad station which made it even more important to the community. During the Civil War, Lancaster sided with the North and lost many residents to battle. After the war, Lancaster slowly recovered but never regained its former glory. In 1951, Lancaster merged with neighboring Syosset to form the new town of Syosset-Lancaster.
