Lancaster, New York is a small town located in the western part of Erie County, New York. It was first settled in 1795 by Loyalists who fled England during the American Revolution. The town developed around the Lancaster Mills, which were founded in 1825. The mill was destroyed by a fire in 1868 and again by a fire in 1971. Today, Lancaster is a small community with a population of over 200 people. Lancaster has had several names over the years including Easton, Amherst, and Carlisle. In 1795, its name was changed to Lancaster because of British military forces occupying the area at that time. In 1800-1801, it was known as West Amherst after Sir William Alexander Forbes (Duke of Abercorn). On March 14th, 1830, it received its current name from George Washington when he approved the survey for what would become Erie County. The first settler in Lancaster was James Hogg who arrived there on May 25th, 1795. He built his home on what is now Main Street and named it Hoggsborough after himself and his family’s farm near Dunmoretown Township in Pennsylvania where they lived until he moved to Lancaster six months earlier to join other colonists hereabouts. Lancaster, New York is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 12,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Lancaster were Dutch farmers who came to this area in 1784. A post office called Lancaster was established in 1813. The name "Lancaster" originated from a grant of land by George Clinton to John Lancaster and others on November 13, 1785. James Lancaster (1765-1832) donated much of this land to the town for development purposes; he also helped finance its construction. The first store opened in Lancaster on December 6, 1814. At that time it was the only store within the town limits and it operated until 1840 when there were two stores opened and one closed due to firewood shortages during the Great Depression era. In 1848 a gristmill was built and became operational; it continued to be used until 1954 when it was replaced by an Allis Chalmers grain elevator which remains in use today as an museum attraction adjacent to First Baptist Church on Main Street. In 1876-77 a women's Temperance Union meeting took place at Centennial Hall which later served as a church and community center before being turned into an apartment building following a fire that destroyed it in 1970. An amusement park called Six Flags Worlds Fair opened near downtown Lancaster in 1938; it closed after just six months due to economic depression forces combined with World War II efforts notto operate amusement parks during wartime times but reopened several years later as Checkers Casino Resort after the war ended hostilities between America's allies Japan and Great Britain). A post office called Lancaster had been established at Second Avenue and Delaware Street west of downtown Buffalo on October 15, 1850; it moved its operations eastward across Second Avenue into what is now occupied by Oneida Savings Bank Building #4 on Park Boulevard south of I-90/State Route 10 north of US 401/ exit 9A (the old Post Office building located next door), becoming known as "Lancaster".
