Lackawanna is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 5,591 at the 2010 census. Lackawanna has been settled by Scots-Irish and other European immigrants for hundreds of years. The name "Lackawanna" means "Hollow Lagoon" in the Iroquois language. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Lackawanna County were Scottish traders who found a place called Hiawatha (now Scranton) on the Susquehanna River in 1674. They named their settlement after the Lochwinnoch Hills near Dumfries, Scotland, where they had been trading goods since they arrived there two years earlier. In 1708, Captain John Smith discovered what would become known as Buffalo Bayou and began to explore the area that now includes Erie and Niagara Counties. He named his new discovery Trinity Bayou after St. Andrew's Anglican parish in Dumfries which he visited while on his way back from conducting missionary work among the Delaware Indians at Pointe du Lac (present day North Tonkin). In 1824, when Buffalo Bayou became part of US 1 (the Erie Canal), many locals migrated to what is now Buffalo because of its easy access to jobs working on the canal project. By 1827, there were over 1,000 people living in Lackawanna Township and it included parts of today's Buffalo and Elmira townships as well as much of Southwestern Ontario north of Toronto. Lackawanna County, New York is a county located in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2010 census, the population was 10,316. Its county seat is Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and its largest city is Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The name Lackawanna comes from the Algonquian word lachanawa meaning "the great bay" or "the creek that flows through it." In 1681, English colonists founded a small settlement on what is now the side of West Branch Lackawanna River in present-day Lackawanna County while surveying for a fur trade route to Canada. The first settler was Nicholas Heinrichs, who built his cabin nearpresent-day Scranton on the banks of the river in 1714. By 1727 there were twelve farms in what are now Lackawanna and Shenango counties; these were organized into townships byGeorge Washington as part of his Boundaries Commission's survey of Pennsylvaniasylvania in 1728. In 1802, when Pennsylvania became an United States territory, Lackawanna County was made up of part of Erie County and eastward along the Susquehannock River to Marchmont Heights until it reached its current boundaries; this caused some friction with Erie County about how far to extend westward for education and other purposes within US territory. On July 14, 1806 – four days after President James Ketchum signed legislation creating Delaware Territory – Congress extended full territorial status to all US territories north of Mexico City (including propertied areas lying within modern New York City).
