Lackawanna is a small town in the Catskill Mountains of New York. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Lackawanna is located instein Township, Ulster County. The area now known as Lackawanna was first settled by Scots-Irish and Scottish settlers who arrived around 1720. Lackawanna County was created on April 14, 1824 from portions of the still existing Monmouth and Ocean counties. The county's name comes from a river that flows through it and its original location in what is now Westchester County. Lackawanna is also the only New York county to be named after a natural body of water - this being the Susquehanna River. The first permanent settler in what became Lackawanna County was Nicholas Biddle, who arrived in 1795. He formed a small trading post near where modern-day White Plains, New York are located. In 1800, John Jacob Astor purchased about 2,000 acres (800 hectares) of land east of modern Scranton for $1 per acre. This purchase gave Astor control over much of what is now Lackawanna County. By 1825, his holdings had grown to 8 square miles (20 km²). In the early 1800s, many farmers in eastern Pennsylvania began growing corn and other grains for export to Great Britain and Europe. These farmers needed more land to grow crops than they could find in their home states because state legislatures were not passing laws granting them allotments of land equal to those allotted to Pennsylvanians living west of the Allegheny Mountains. So instead, these farmers bought up large blocks of forest or swamp land north of Philadelphia in order to create new farms around these properties; this process is sometimes called "the paramount deed."
