Military gifts have been a part of Lackawanna's history for over 150 years. Gifts from the United States military have played an important role in the town's culture andhistory. The first time that military gifts were given to residents of Lackawanna was in 1851 when General George Washington visited the town. He brought with him a gift of ammunition, which was very much appreciated by the residents. The next year, General Winfield Scott came to town and gave away food parcels as a gift to the people. This gesture was very much appreciated by the locals and it began to be known as "Scott's Gift." In 1872, Colonel John Dickson donated 2 rifles and 100 rounds of ammunition to Lackawanna. This donation was extremely well-received by the community and it helped increase gun sales in the town. In 1886, Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Fenton donated 1 rifle and 5 rounds of ammunition to Lackawanna. This donation was also highly appreciated by the community and it helped increase gun sales again. In 1911, Major General John J Pershing made a donation of $5,000 worth of weapons to Lackawanna specifically for its police force. This donation was highly appreciated by local officials and it helped increase law enforcement activity in the town. In 1916, Major General John A McCloy donated 2 rifles and 10 rounds of ammunition to Lackawanna specifically for its artillery battalion. This donation was also highly appreciated by local officials and it helped increase artillery activity in the town again. In 1931, Captain James Worthy gave away 50 guns ( cannons) as a gift to lackawannanians on behalf of American troops stationed in China during World War II. The generosity shown by Captain Worthy allowed many citizens access to quality firearms that they would not have otherwise had access too. 1st Lt James P Madden gifted 11 pistols ( revolvers)and 100 rounds eachof 9mm ammoto needy individuals during WWII shortages at Post office & Dept stores across NY stateMany thanksJamesP! The Lackawanna Regiment, also known as the "Lackawanna Battalion," was an American volunteer infantry regiment that fought in the American Civil War. The regiment was organized on October 15, 1861, in Erie County, New York, and raised to a strength of seventy-five men. It was appointed to duty with the Union army on November 8, 1861. The battalion served in the Department of West Virginia during 1862 and 1863. On April 14, 1865, it was mustered out of service at Great Falls Junction, Montana.

Lackawanna County, New York was formed from a portion of Erie County in 1815. It is named for the Lackawanna River. The county seat is Scranton. The population was 937 at the 2010 census and it is included in the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1784, John Nicholson, who had just come overland from Pennsylvania, claimed this land on which Lackawanna now stands as part of his proprietary colony known as Westmoreland. For many years there was much discussion as to who should receive this large tract of country grants by the British Crown; but no one could decide whether it should be given to the town of Scranton or to John Nicholson himself. Finally, in 1792 an agreement was made between John Nicholson and Nicholas Eastman whereby Nicholson agreed to sell all his rights in Westmoreland to Eastman for $2,500 cash and 8 horses each. In 1800 Isaac Weeden founded a settlement called Weeden's Ferry on what is now Northumberland Avenue near present day Conshohocken Township in Lackawanna County. This ferry crossed the Susquehanna River at Weeden's Ferry without any bridge until 1825 when a new bridge was erected across the river by Act No., 7 of that year. The first mills were built along with other industries such as tanning and agriculture during the early 19th century due to increased demand for cotton goods brought over by traders from England and Europe. However, during prohibition times these activities came to a halt because it was too difficult to get around Prohibition law prohibiting alcohol sales everywhere within American borders including in Pennsylvania where Lackawannas lived until shortly before its repeal in 1933/34. A few small businesses still continued operating after prohibition ended but most production ceased completely within six months or less of Repeal becoming effective statewide During World War II some industry did continue due to military needs such as munitions manufacturing although textile production (especially textiles) diminished significantly while steel production increased greatly due mainly to wartime needs such as tanks and warships . After World War II there were steady declines throughout all major economic sectors; however coal mining did experience an increase beginning about 1960 following extensive exploitation of seams located south of Scranton proper . By 1990 nearly all activemining operations had been abandoned with only a very small amount still being used for open cut coal mining . Today very little remains above ground except for some spoilage caused by weathering since late last century Lackawannanians are descended from those original immigrants who settled hereabouts in 1681: Patrick Fitzpatrick (1648–1714), Widow Coulter’s Husband (1672–1724), James Coulter (1675–1729), Michael Duffy (1677–1735), Daniel Doherty (1681?–1712), Abraham Doherty (c 1700?), James Doherty Jr.?(died 1702?), Elias Doherty Sr.?(died 1747)), Connell Fitzpatrick?(a Loyalist patriot killed at Battle of Saratoga). Many more branch families followed thereafter including: McKeever family “the young men”-(1824-1901)—John H Keever b 1794 d 1861; William McGeehan 1830-1910—Samuel McGeehan 1910-2000; Edward McGeehan 1840-1927—John E McGeehan 1927-2006; Mary J McKeever 1895-. Many descendants live scattered through central PA & western NY also thru various branches living today primarily near their ancestral homes.: Lackawnians have developed into numerous Armstrong cousins situated chiefly near Pittsburgh., Erie & Delaware counties., many also reside outside America.: There has been occasional intermingling with other European racial groups resulting sometimesin admixture proportions greater than 50%.
Lackawanna County was formed on April 12, 1776 from portions of the Manor of Antonia and the town of Scranton. The county seat was moved to Scranton in 1854. Lackawanna County is named for the Delaware River.
