The Lackawanna Coast Guard has a rich history dating back to 1849. The first coast guard station was built on the present-day site of Scranton, Pennsylvania, and the first vessel to be manned by coast guard personnel was the brigantine "Nassau" in 1851. In 1865, the United States Congress authorized creation of a district along the New York–Pennsylvania border as part of efforts to prevent smuggling operations. The original Lackawanna Coast Guard Station was located at Cattaraugus Island, and it served patrols along the Delaware River and its tributaries until 1923 when it moved to its present location at Scranton. Throughout its years of service, the Coast Guard has made numerous contributions to both local residents and visitors alike. For example, in 2006, they helped celebrate Scranton's centennial with a series of events including an open house, carnival rides for children, beach volleyball games for adults, and a fireworks show over PA Avenue
Lackawanna is a census-designated place (CDP) in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 5,420 at the 2010 census. The CDP is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Lackawanna Creek watershed and its tributaries are located in Lackawanna Township and Monroe County. The creek forms the eastern border of the CDP and flows generally northwest to southeast through the township, emptying into Niagara River near Geneva. Lackawanna was first settled by German colonists in 1795 as "Lachenwalde". In 1814 it became part of Erie County and was renamed "Lackawanna" after a nearby creek. In 1837 it was consolidated with Monroe Township to form what is now Erie County. In 1910, a new town began to be built south of Rome on the Lackawanna River: Rome quickly outgrown its original location and in 1912 construction began on an even larger new town called Slippery Rock which would eventually encompass all of present-day Erie County. The Racine Manufacturing Company started production there in 1915; it remains one of the largest employers in Lackawannon today. Roman's initial settlement attracted many other businesses including several breweries which continued operations until prohibition ended alcohol sales in America in 1933 In 1924, three small towns – Whitehall, Southwick and Dennison – amalgamated to form what is now Scranton/Wilkes-Barre metropolitan area; this change also affected Lackawannan residents as Scranton annexed much of what had been included within Lower Manhattan since 1624 when Dutch settlers founded that city from around Kill Devil Hills.. In 1970, parts of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre were transferred from PA to NY so that they could become home to Binghamton University; however these boundaries remain undefined today due largely to administrative convenience more than historical reasons On July 1st 1969, portions of Clinton Township (west side) merged with Monroeville Township (east side) forming another unincorporated community called Clinton annexing most or all of Monroeville along with some land owned by then Borough President John Fenton - this left only two blocks east of downtown Monroeville still unincorporated despite being considered part Of Clinton Township . This business merger has been challenged by some who allege that annexation violated zoning laws as well as private property rights dating back over 100 years

Lackawanna was a small town in upstate New York on the banks of the Susquehanna River. It is now part of Scranton, Pennsylvania. The area that is now Lackawanna was first settled by German colonists in 1722. In 1832, the town was renamed for Captain John Lackawanna, who had been an officer in the American Revolution and had helped erect a fort at present-day Scranton. The town proper did not come into being until about 1848, when a post office was established at what is now downtown Lackawanna. At this time there were only about fifty people living in the town limits. The first store opened in 1853 and local farmers began to sell goods from their fields near where the Susquehanna flows into it. By 1860, some two thousand people lived in Lackawanka. In 1865, due to skirmishes between Native Americans and whites along the Susquehanna River, General Anthony Wayne ordered all troops out of New York state except for a detachment under Major General David Dixon to protect settlers downriver from Indian attack. This order caused much alarm among residents of eastern Pennsylvania who saw themselves as being vulnerable to Indian attack; furthermore, it alarmed those attending West Point who felt that they would be unable to provide help if needed should an enemy appear on their doorstep. As a result of these concerns, General Wayne ordered Captain John Auchinleck commanding forces stationed downstream at Camden Landing (now Lewistown) instead of enough reinforcements upstream at Fort Erie to deal with any potential Indian assault on southeastern Pennsylvania specifically targeting eastern PA settlers intent on crossing the river unprovoked or without orders from HQ – effectively leaving southern New York open forIndian aggression without military response or notification! The lack of adequate military response led Governor Andrew Johnson to sign legislation creating strategic reserve corps which would have been positioned upstream against possible Indian invasions; however this measure also failed because Johnson wanted more troops assigned eastward towards Maryland rather than westward towards New York City – positions which he knew would be available if necessary given India's recent history with England (eastern PA natives again became vulnerable).
