In the early 1800s, Lackawanna was a small farming community in Ulster County, New York. The town's only industry was agriculture and land trading. Air force deployments were not common in this era, as aviation was still in its infancy. However, the Lackawanna Volunteer Militia had an air detachment that flew military planes on unarmed flights over their territory during World War I. In 1919, the volunteer militia disbanded and all of its aircraft were donated to the United States Military Academy at West Point. Thereafter, air force deployments became more common in Lackawanna as the academy grew into one of America's most distinguished universities. The use of helicopters for aerial transport began in rentals by the United States Air Force Academy at West Point in 1955. From then on, every U.S military academy offered helicopter services to their students and staff. The first air force deployment was made by USAF LtCol John Dorman with CH-47 Chinook helicopters from Yeskell AFB on December 14th, 1957 flying Search and Rescue missions for members of the Coast Guard off Long Island Sound during winter conditions.. Today, there are over 200 different types of helicopters operated by both the United States Air Force Academy at West Point and Army National Guard units throughout America; including many used exclusively by our militaries for search and rescue missions when necessary or when deployed abroad as part of international operations such as Operation Neptune Spear or Operation Enduring Freedom..

Lackawanna is a small town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 3,853 at the 2010 census. Lackawanna is bordered by Erie County on the north and east, Scranton and Wilkes-Barre counties on the south, and Armstrong County on the west. The town of Lackawanna was first settled in 1795 by Dutch colonists who named it "Wappingerade". In 1814, it was renamed to "Lackawanna" after a stream that flows through the town. In 1838, it became part of the new United States state of New York. In 1860, Lackawanna Academy was founded in what is now downtown Lackawanna and remains one of America's most well-known secondary schools today. As a result of its success as a school district and its strong community spirit, many businesses have been located in or around downtown Lackawannan including post offices (the last being closed in 2003), police department headquarters (since 1997), fire department Headquarters (since 1978), banks (the last being closed in 2003) and numerous restaurants/bars/cafes. One notable resident from this time period was Samuel Morse who resided in an house on Main Street known as "Morse House". His son Alfred also lived there during this time period when he developed his famous early telegraph system which still operates today. Downtown Lackawannan has seen some recent redevelopment with several new bars and restaurants opening up such as The Grapeswine Tavern & Restaurant which opened up adjacent to Pennsylvania Avenue Park; Baja Burrito Cantina; Peacock Pizza; Vici Grille & Brewery; Johnny Rockets - now called Mickey D's - ; Dunkin' Donuts - now called Wawa - ; Chipper's Chicken Shack; Damon's Donuts - now defunct - ; Sawgrass Mills Coliseum which housed lacrosse and wrestling matches until their demolition in 2006; High Noon Saloon which reopened as an Odeon Cinema prior to its closure in 2009 due to economic difficulties; Twisted Fables Brewing Company starting up across from an old gas station known as The Kwik Shop back when it served corn dogs.; Buffalo Wings Delivery & Barbecue Co.; Just for Laughs Comedy Club opposite Pioneer Cemetery since 2002
