In the 1860s, Marines were first deployed to duty in New York. The Marine Corps was organized on October 1, 1861 and the first Marines served in Rhode Island. They were then sent to Maine where they saw action against Confederate forces. On December 1, 1861 the Marines fought their way into Manhattan and Brooklyn which they captured. November 24, 1862 saw them fighting at Fort Totten in Staten Island which resulted in a Marine victory. After that battle, the Marines fought various engagements such as Battle of Long Beach (1865), Battle of Marco Polo Bridge (1866), Battle of Manila Bay (1868) and finally Battle of Belleau Wood (1870). During this time, Marines also took part in many other wars including the Spanish-American War ( 1898), World War I (1914-1918) and World War II (1939-1945). In 1945, after many years of service, the Marine Corps was disbanded. However, it has continued to be active through various incarnations such as Special Forces units and commando units. Nowadays there are over 300 marines deployed worldwide with a tradition dating back to 1846 when they served aboard USS Constitution under Commodore John Rodgers

Kiryas Joel (born 1945) is an American photographer, documentarian, and artist living in New York City. He has been awarded several national awards for his work, including the prestigious Aperture Foundation Award for Documentary Photography in 2006 and the Edward M. Smith Fellowship from the Brooklyn Museum of Art in 2002. Joel also won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for photography for his series "The Piano Lesson". Kiryas Joel was born on October 15, 1945, in The Bronx, New York City. After graduating from high school he studied art at Cooper Union where he met fellow student David Salinger. They decided to go into photography together and founded their own company Creative Time Publications in 1970. In 1971 they traveled to India with a group of photographers called The Generation who were encouraged by then-President Nixon to shoot what they saw there as "a new kind of photography". In 1973 they moved to Berlin where they continued photographing until 1979 when they moved back to New York City and reopened their studio at 375 Eighth Avenue. From 1978-1981 he was director of photography for National Geographic magazine before becoming an associate curator at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). He rejoined Creative Time Publications as curatorin 1984 and held that position until 1993 when he became department head at MoMA's PS1 gallery. From 1997-2001 he served as deputy director of research atMoMA before taking over as director in 2003. In 2006 Kiryas Joel was awarded the Aperture Foundation Award for Documentary Photography which makes him one of only two photographers ever honored with this distinction (the other being Edward M. Smith). His series "The Piano Lesson" received a 2007 Pulitzer Prize nomination; it was ultimately successful receiving four votes out of eight total. In 2009 Kiryas Joel received an honorary doctorate from Hunter College Teachers' College after completing 45 years teaching fine arts photography students throughout Manhattan area schools during winter term 2009/10; this event coincided with his 50th year as a professional photographer

And they soon became known for their philanthropic work – helping others through education, charity, and political activism. Today, Kiryas Joel’s Jews are one of America’s oldest practicing groups of faith-based minorities; they have a synagogue (the Emanuel Yeshiva), two schools (one private, one public), three cemeteries (including one with tombstones dating back to 1660), three rabbinical courts (one male only), six synagogues around the United StatesA total of 114 congregationsA recent study found that 88%of adults living within 10 milesof a synagogue attend services at least once per monthAnd more than 1 million children learn Hebrew at home each year through daycare centers housed within Orthodox Jewish families
Kiryas Joel is a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of West Nyack, New York, United States. The population was 12,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse–Albany–East Syracuse, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The CDP includes the villages of Albion and Canada Village and most of the hamlet of Kiryas Joel itself. Kiryas Joel was platted in 1853 as part of a grant to John Paine from James Monroe; it was renamed for Joelias Paine after he donated land to build a school in 1872. In 1927, Kiryas Joel became an unincorporated community within West Nyack Township. According to the 2000 United States Census there were 11,898 people living in Kiryas Joel CDP who identified themselves as being "Hispanic", 3% more than the next closest CDP located on Long Island (1%, based on 2000 U.S. Census data). In 2008, there were 12,859 people living in KiryasJoel CDP who identified themselves as being "Hispanic". This population increase has been largely due to Hispanics migrating from Central America and Mexico over recent years; however white non-Hispanic residents have also increased since 2000 by about 2%. As of 2010, almost all structures within KiryasJoel are owner-occupied: 94%. The median age for residents is 38 years old which is lower than all other New York City boroughs but higher than Suffolk County (24%).
