The Kiryas Joel Air Force Base, located in the town of Kiryas Joel, New York, has been a major airbase for the United States military since it was founded in 1941. The base is home to three wings- an AAF Wing, an AF Reserve Wing and a Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) Wing. It also houses two operational groups: the 379th Bombardment Squadron and 9th Rescue Group. The Kiryas Joel AFB Museum is open to the public from 10am to 4pm every day except Saturday. Admission is free. The museum contains displays on airpower history, aircrafts and equipment used at the base, as well as photos and relics from the war years. There are also exhibits on local life during World War II, including post-war recollections of residents by military personnel who served at Kiryas Joel AFB. Kiryas Joel AFB was built on land that once belonged to Camp Sherman in what is now Yonkers, New York City. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender in 1945, American forces began planning for postwar occupation of Japan and made plans for a new airbase in what is now Kiryas Joel AB. In 1941 President Franklin D Roosevelt approved construction of the new airbase while attendance at nearby Manhattan Airport was increasing due to wartime demand for airline traffic between New York City and Tokyo. On October 25th 1941 America's first squadron arrived at Kiryas Joel AFB when Republic F-4 Phantom fighter planes departed from Gotham Municipal Airport bound for Japan escorted by five P-38 Lightning fighters flown by Army Air Forces officers under Lt Colonel James Hoggart Jr.. On December 12th 1941 Japanese bombers attacked USAAF units based at Manhattan Airport leading Vice Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto to order his fleet into battle off Hokkaido Island against British Commonwealth forces commanded by Admiral Arthur Radford.. Two days later Yankee Doodle Doomed observer Jimmy Mooney observed Henderson Field being bombed with " visual bomb indicators" meaning bombing runs were being directed towards Los Angeles airport which he thought might be hit but no damage was done; however this story may be apocryphal as there is no evidence that any Wellington bombers were ever sent over LA during WW2...In early 1942 responsibility for defense of Japan passed from U S To Japans Imperial General Headquarters (IHQ). On January 15th 1942 Majestic C-46 Commando flying troop carrier USS Indianapolis conducted its first combat mission enroute from Iwo Jima Island to Yokota AB when nine brave Japanese soldiers were killed standard operating procedure following successful inspection of Indianapolis' powerful 1 million gallon gas tank!On February 2nd 1942 Tenth Air Force Bendix Enola Gay flew its maiden mission delivering four nuclear weapons tests off Kwajalein Atoll killing all 26 people on board including commander Rear Admiral Jesse Jackson who had ordered their launch only hours earlier!
