The first settlement in Kingston was on the east side of what is now Clinton River, by Pierre Le Moyne and his brother-in-law, David Thompson. In 1785, George Washington's Army moved into Kingston during its siege of Fort Stanwix in western Albany County. In 1814, when the Erie Canal was being built through central New York State, Kingston became one of its early terminus. The village grew rapidly because it became an important transportation hub for goods coming from upstate New York to Buffalo and other markets in Ontario and Pennsylvania. During World War II, Kingston was one of five cities that were placed under military jurisdiction as part of General Headquarters Manhattan Project (GHQP). The town served as a production center for plutonium production at Oak Ridge National Laboratory; part of GHQP's Manhattan Project Scientific Research program; and also played an important role in supporting American military operations in Europe during World War II including Operation Overlord. Today, Kingston remains an agricultural community with a strong sense of community pride based on its traditions such as Quakerism and small government conservatism dating back to colonial times. The town has seen some growth since 2000 with the addition of two new villages - Easton and Westport - which together have a population over 10,000 people.
