Kingston, New York is a small town in the Hudson Valley of New York. It is located on the east side of Kingston Lake, between Congers and North Syracuse. The population was 5,711 at the 2000 census. The first people to live in Kingston were the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. They lived in what is now central Kingston until the late 18th century when they moved westward into Pennsylvania. In 1776, during the American Revolutionary War, General George Washington visited Kingston and ordered all Indian men and women living within three miles of Crown Point to leave or face execution. In 1824, Jacob Riis began his two-year study of conditions in urban areas around New York City and he reported back to his editor at Harper's Ferry that “the dirt streets are dirty enough for rats but clean enough for human beings only if you go very fast... Houses are built so tight together that no one can get out without being seen by others... There are few shrubs or trees anywhere around; there is not even a blade of grass anywhere."[1] Riis also noted that "The water which flows through our streets is often too polluted for us to drink".[2] He recommended that citizens take advantage of public baths outside their homes which he called 'bathing places for gentlemen'. In 1834–35, he published an article about this subject called "A Model Town",[3] which showed how such a village could be built with efficiency using common materials available at hand - bricks from local quarries and lime from Brockport (one hour away). This article became influential among early 20th century planners who wanted city-like structures without any reliance on imported materials. Kingsland was originally part of Westchester County before it was separated into Onondaga County in 1814 and Albany County in 1830.
