Kingston is a town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse-Albany-New Rochelle, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Kingston was Nicholas de Champlain. He married Agnes White in 1624 and had two children: Nicholas and Catherine. Nicholas built the first sawmill on the east side of what is now Kingston Village Road in 1627. The village was named for him and his wife, who were also its first residents. In 1692, Jameson Livingston sold to Samuel Lewis some land west of present-day Kingston on which he founded the city of Livingston. George Washington called this location "Kingston." In 1714, John Montresor acquired 840 acres (30 ha) along Canada Creek west of present day Kingston from David Livingstone for £100 sterling ($160 U.S.). Montresor renamed it "Montresor's Valley," after himself and his brother Maurice—the founder of Montreal—and donated it to the Crown as part of the royal grant for Albany County established by King George II in 1715. The valley became known as Montresor's Landowning Province because much of it passed through French hands during Quebecois resistance against British rule during the Seven Years' War (1754-1763). For many years after that period ended, most inhabitants referred to their section as "the Province". When William Lyon Mackenzie purchased 1 million acres (500 km2) around Kingston from Sir John Johnson in 1819 for $1 million dollars ($10 million Canadian), he divided it into five townships: Onondaga, Cayuga, Oswego, Seneca and Oneida; each township would be headed by a magistrate elected by its citizens under an indenture agreement between them and Mackenzie until 1828 when they were granted self government under a new system implemented by Alexander Hamilton as governor general. The Township System Act gave each township an annual appropriation called a “purchase money” which helped maintain public works such as roads and schools while also providing social welfare benefits to its citizens
