The town of Johnson City was founded in 1785 by Captain James Livingston, who also named it for General George Washington. The town grew rapidly and by 1805 had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1813, the town was renamed Johnson City after Rear Admiral John C. Johnson, commander of U.S. Squadron blockading Spanish Florida during the Pacific War. The city saw its first census in 1830 with a population of 714 people. By 1840, the population had increased to 1,924 and by 1860 it had reached 2,821 people.During the American Civil War (1861-65), Johnson City served as a military depot on Staten Island and became an important center for arms production in New York state. In 1865, the city was incorporated as a borough within the new Queens County and remained an important center until it was annexed by New York City in 1898.
