Today, the town remains a small farming community with a strong Amish presence.

Johnson City is a small town in the U.S. state of New York. It is located in Oneida County, about 20 miles east of Syracuse and 30 miles southwest of Rochester. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census. Johnson City has been a part of the Rochester–on-Hudson metropolitan area since its merger with Syracuse on July 1, 2002. The first settler in Johnson City was John Elisha Cook who arrived there in 1814. A post office called Cookstown was established in 1827, but it was discontinued in 1828 because no one wanted to receive mail from a place with only three residents. The first store in Johnson City opened on May 11, 1830 by Jacob Weiser and his brother Solomon Weiser (the latter being also the first owner of what is now Central Square). By 1840, there were 10 stores operating around town including six owned by men and four by women; all but two had closed within ten years. In 1848 James Witherspoon set up shop as an apothecary after moving from Buffalo; he operated until his death in 1865. Witherspoon's son Julius Witherspoon took over operation until his death in 1901; then it passed through several hands before it was purchased by George Latham Sr., who ran it as a general store for thirty-six years before selling it to Hemanus Noyes Jr., who operated it as a grocery store for thirty-eight years before selling it to Simeon Davenport in 1916. Davenport ran it as a bakery/nursery for ninety-one years before sold it to Elmer Jansen who operate as an insurance agent and real estate developer until his death in 1984; then the property passed through several hands until bought by Dragan Vujicic who operates it as a museum according to its original plan which included housing apartments above the museum building and providing access to both buildings via an underground garage In 1938 Dragan Vujic founded the Johnson City Museum which became operational that year with sixty-six items on display including nine cannons donated by Genesee County Sheriff Amos Beall Johnson City experienced significant growth starting around 1920 when entrepreneur Harry Cushman began developing new business ventures such as carpentry and trucking services along Route 522 which grew into what is now known as Cushman Trucking Company entrepôt style businesses proliferated throughout central New York during this period becoming increasingly important not just due to their proximity to urban centers but also their ability provide easy access to goods unavailable outside those areas In 1928 Cushman developed what would become known as "CUSHMANVILLE" across from downtown on routes 522 and 256 following plans submitted by him with assistance from investment banker Archibald McCloskey producing over 100 residences between 1926 & 1930 initial development cost $1 million dollars clearing land for development came back largely thanks to contributions from industrialists John Dyson (Manhattan Steel) & Cyrus McCormick (Empire Cotton) success led McCloskey & Co.; owners until 1976 when they sold interests back To city government This program resulted eventually culminating with creation of Downtown Development Authority which manages properties underlying CUSHMANVILLE while continuing donor support thru leaseback arrangements
