The Johnson City National Guard was organized on May 25, 1881. The unit was activated and first served in the New York State Militia. On November 1, 1881, the National Guard was authorized to consist of military companies from each state. On December 8, 1881, the New York Division of the National Guard became a brigade and on February 12,1882, it became an infantry regiment. On July 3rd 1898 Major General George Armstrong Custer resigned his commission as general of the United States Army after being accused of involvement in a fistfight with Major John Nicolay and other officers at Fort Laramie Wyoming. This event led to Custer's reputation as a controversial general who had been mishandled by commanders during his time as army commander in North America. On September 26th 1898 The New York Division of the National Guard received its order to active duty for service in World War I which would last until 1919 when it was disbanded due to budget cuts at The Pentagon. The Johnson City National Guard has seen service in every war since World War I however its most recent deployment came during Operation Neptune's Spear which took place between October 1998-January 1999. This operation involved sending soldiers from Johnson City to fight in Afghanistan against Taliban forces who were attacking US forces there that were also fighting against Soviet troops who were invading Afghanistan at that time. After more than three years deployments this is the first time that Johnson City has directly contributed troops to an international conflict since their mobilization four years earlier

Johnson City was founded by Scottish immigrants in 1824 and has been inhabited since then. The first settler arrived in 1825, and the town was established as a village in 1829. There were no banks until 1830, when a branch of the Erie Canal opened and business grew quickly. The first school was built in 1831 and it served as both a daycare center for local farmers and a primary school for local children up to age 12. In 1865, Johnson City became an organized municipality with its own government. The population grew rapidly during World War II because of wartime demand for military workers, but declined after 1945 due to decreasing industrial activity and other factors. Despite this decline, however,Johnson City remains one of the most important settlements within Chenango County due to its close proximity to major highways and its growing trade links with surrounding communities.

Johnson City is a town in Upstate New York, United States. The population was 3,848 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Johnson County. The town was first settled in 1794 by General James Wilkinson and his family from Connecticut. He named it for John Johnson, an American Revolutionary War general and friend of George Washington. The first post office in the town was established in 1806, and remained open until 1865. In 1845, the towns of Weequahic, Cornville, and Holmdel were consolidated into Johnson City to form what is now known as "the largest city in upstate New York". Johnston's Creek flows through the center of the town. The creek forms part of the border between Johnson County and Ontario County. Johnson City grew rapidly due to its location on the Erie Canal (now Interstate 885) and its access to major transportation routes. By 1920, it had over 120 businesses and 2,000 residents. During World War II, Johnson City became one of several sites where General Dwight D Eisenhower tested new artillery techniques during Operation Market Garden. On September 5th 1945 Congress authorized Eisenhower to establish Montgomery GI Hospital in honor of General Douglas MacArthur which opened on October 11th 1945 with 1 beds for each patient minus those who died within 42 days as required by military regulations at that time
