Johnson City was the first stop on the coffee trail for American traders and settlers in what is now Upstate New York. The town was founded by John Johnson, a settler from England, in 1724. Johnson City became a major transportation center for goods coming down the Susquehanna River from Pennsylvania and then north to Lake Ontario. The town also grew as a tourist attraction due to its beauty and rich history. In 1856, Johnson City was renamed after President James Buchanan.

Johnson City is a small town in the Catskills of upstate New York, located on the east side of Lake Ontario near Niagara Falls. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. Johnson City is part of the Mohawk Valley and is served by three public schools: Johnson City Central High School, Johnson City West High School, and Easton Central High School. The village core includes six residential blocks clustered around a large central square with a library, post office, fire station, and two churches. The town was founded in 1836 by General James Wilkinson as a stop on the stagecoach route from Albany to Buffalo. At first it consisted of only a few houses; but because of its strategic location within easy reach of both lakes and the falls—a fact never lost on its early settlers—Johnson City quickly grew into one of New York's most important settlements. After loggers discovered fertile ground for farming in what is now central Johnson City, growth accelerated until by 1840 there were more than 100 residents living in small farmsteads scattered throughout the rolling hills surrounding town. As trade increased between Canada and New England via boats crossing Lake Erie (and then across the open country), settlers began to arrive from other parts of America as well. In 1847 Andrew Carnegie donated land to build an industrial park that would include an iron works and paper mills; this development led to rapid growth in manufacturing throughout eastern UPSTATE NEW YORK during the late 19th century In 1850 General John Pemberton fought his way through Union army troops besieging Fort Erie while leading an attack against Fort George on Toronto Island; when he emerged victorious he called upon his Creek allies – many of whom had converged on Johnson City – to help him suppress slave rebels holed up inside Fort Erie In 1865 local farmers raised enough money for Union forces opposing Confederate general Robert Emancipation Proclamation to besiege Fort William Henry at Kingston; after several days' fighting Union forces stormed the fort and captured over 1,000 slaves In 1867 local farmers organized themselves into what became known as "The Gentry" club, which sponsored social events such as horse races and fencing tournaments By 1870 there were 2,500 people living in Johnson City proper with 500 businesses employing over 100 workers During World War I various industries closed or moved away due largely to wartime rationing; however like many other northeastern UPSTATE NEW YORK towns* [*see below] community spirit generated new businesses including a candy store*, *two ice cream parlors*, *a meat market*, *a bakery* [*one family ran it until 1954], *an insurance agency*, etc., which thrived despite difficult times In 1919-1920 local businessmen formed "The Citizens" Club which promoted civic activities such as lectures by eminent experts on subjects such as agriculture or industry* [*This club disbanded circa 1920]; during these years also saw significant growth in downtown business activity spearheaded by Chamber president Julius Rosenwald who leased government property at Eighth Street & Main Streets for use as a commercial district
