The Johnson City Airforce Base was established in 1948 as the first airbase in the New York area. It served as a base for the United States Air Force until its closure in 1996. The base was home to the 555th Wing, which is currently inactive and located at Whiteman AFB, Missouri. The wing's former structure can be seen onsite today as part of the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Visitor Center. Air Force planes from Johnson City have been used in many conflicts including World War II; Operation Desert Storm; and Operation Enduring Freedom. Today, some of these planes are still flying with active duty units in various locations across America. Some notable alumni of Johnson City AFB include: Colonel James Doolittle, who piloted one of the aircraft that brought Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to within striking range of Hiroshima during World War II; Major General Chuck Keilor, commander of U.S. Forces Afghanistan; and Major General Jeffery Ladd, commandant of UH-1 Huey Helicopter Squadron 1 at Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio.

The Johnson City Museum of Air Force History and Heritage has a gift history dating back to 1945. The museum's first gift was a watch from the United States Military Overseas Service in honor of World War II veteran, James A. "Jimmy" McIntyre. In 1957, the museum presented an American Eagles model helicopter to the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio. In 1966, the museum presented an F-4 Phantom fighter jet to the Air Force Museum at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas. In 1978, the museum bestowed upon the USAF Academy at Maxwell AFB in Montgomery County, Alabama a Boeing 747-200C Stratofortress passenger plane as part of its centennial celebration. This was followed by presentation of an Airbus A380 VH-AIB air transport aircraft to RAF Lakenheath Airport in England on March 5th, 2016 as part of RAF Northolt's 125th anniversary celebrations. Since it inception as a museum in 1945 with only one gift per year until 1966 when it began offering gifts for anniversaries (including jets), the Johnson City Museum has amassed over 1,500 gifts from all branches of service and civilians alike!

Today’s USAF has a rich history dating back to its establishment during World War II as one component of America’s global wartime effort. Significant gifts have been made by members both before and after the war including: fighter planes such as P-51 Mustangs and F-86 Sabres; bombers such as Boeing B-29 Superfortresses; missiles such as Polaris submarines; tanks; combat vehicles including Humvees and Abrams tanks; parts & equipment for special operations forces units worldwide; and cultural artifacts like model airplanes or helicopters used by USAF pilots throughout history!
