Johnson City, New York is home to the Air Force's 307th Airlift Wing. The wing provides airlift and transport services for military and civilian missions in the New York metropolitan area. The 307th Airlift Wing was activated on September 3, 1952 as part of the United States Air Force's organization during the Korean War. It was redesignated as the 307th Fighter- interceptor squadron on May 15, 1957. During Operation Provide Comfort in October 1961, the squadron flew Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft to provide airlift to refugees flowing through Johnson City from South Korea. On November 5, 1960, a Lockheed P-3 Orion aircraft from this unit lifted 855 Army troops and equipment from Daegu Airport in South Korea for an upcoming US deployment to West Germany. The 309th Rescue Squadron (Airlift) was activated at Lackland AFB on October 1, 1951 with Douglas DC-4C flown by Military Airlift Command pilots conducting search and rescue operations in support of USAF strategic objectives during the Korean War. The squadron flew Boeing RC-135Cs until it was transferred to Wright Patterson AFB on February 17, 1974 when Republic Airlines Flight 648 crashed into a mountain near Aschaffenburg AB while en route from Seoul International Airport to Ibadan AB Nigeria with 269 passengers and 14 crew members aboard. All except four survivors were killed instantly; all but one victim died of their injuries within hours of impact. The USAF is one of the seven military services of the United States federal government and its members are divided into three wings: the Air Force Reserve, the Active duty Air Force, and the National Guard. Johnson City, New York is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. It is located on the east bank of the river Seneca at its confluence with the Susquehanna River. The population was 7,551 at the 2010 census. Johnson City is named for John Johnson, an American country singer who had a small music store there in 1869. The first settler in Johnson City was George D'Angelo and his family from Canada in 1824. They built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and started trading with other settlers in that area. In 1830, Nicholas Biddle bought land from D'Angelo and founded the town of Biddleville to encompass what is now Johnson City proper. by 1840, all of Green County had been organized into two townships: Monmouth and Hudson (now part of Schenectady). On February 17, 1841, during President James K. Polk'sadministration, New York State created Johnson City as one of twelve villages within Syracuse Township (now part of Rensselaer County), based on recommendations made by GovanandTappan Weems secretary of state under President Andrew Jackson. The first store opened in 1869 inside Mrs. brutalar's gin mill on Front Street which still stands today as a local landmark known for its unique architecture andassoiled windowsills made from animal toothpicks that could be seen outside even during Prohibition days because it was not subject to liquor licensing restrictions like most stores then open in America In 1898-99 when Buffalo Bill Cody came through the area he stayed at Mrs LaFontaine’s hotel which still stands today .
