But it was not easy for Plymouth Colony's leaders to get approval from King Henry VIII for such a move: many Puritans felt that conversion ceremonies should be conducted through peaceful means rather than through warfare.Nonetheless, by 1514 most residents of Portsmouth had converted to Christianity and begun setting up homes in what is now Arlington County near Washington D.C.. Meanwhile, another group of English colonists -ethe Pilgrims -was leading an effort to establish new land claims along the Potomac River Valley between Virginia and Maryland (later West Virginia). The Pilgrims hoped that this land would become available as resources increased due to new discoveries along the river valley floor – especially coal seams dating back to Prehistoric times! In spring of 1607 Captain John Smith sailed his ship White Cloud II northwestward out into Narragansett Baysearching for passage eastward across the Atlantic Ocean . On July 20th he sighted land about midway between Nantucket Islandand Cape Cod , off which he named Rhode Island after Sir Francis Drake who had discovered it earlier that year .
